Not terrible for the price, but the bass just stomps on everything else at everything above mid volume. That's just with my phone, haven't tried of my dac/amp yet. I think the M&Js are generally a better option for the 100$ +/- price point, far cleaner, crisper, tighter faster bass, and a warm honky-ness that is much nicer than that makes it sound. These emus do benefit from being a touch laid and a bit more spacey feeling, while my M&J's kinda feel like they are pushing sound into your ears, fortunately that seems to be mellowing out with break in. All In all, I wouldn't say they are bad, there is much worse for the price, but also much better, and that's the problem with recommending the purplehearts.

zep483Does it help with the minimal soundstaging and "meh" clarity? More importantly, is the money spent to fix them worth it? Cuz it's getting dangerously close to 6xx and he4xx money, and those will simply embarrass these e-mu's. In hindsight I'm mostly disappointed (more so than my initial comment). I haven't used them once since in more than 2 months.

DeliriumTriggerYep, it helps with sound stage too. But these are a closed back headphone, so they'll never as good as something like a 4xx or 6xx. You can always get the cheaper brainwaves hm5 pads... I think they're like 22 bucks. I just went with sheepskin cause I'm baller and for the comforts ;) positively you can power these better with a regular phone than you can with the 4xx or 6xx too. If you don't mind open, consider some of the koss options like kph30i ksc75 or porta pros... porta pros with yaxi pads pretty much sound like 6xx with better sound stage but less clarity.

zep483I have the e18 Kunlun anyways, so I'm gonna grab the he-4xx. My bro has the regular 400's and I was super impressed, especially with the soundstaging and bass clarity, listening to biophilia they had miles and miles of soundstaging (and that album savagely exposes speaker weaknesses) mind u I was listing through a schitt stack and not my Fiio e18. On my m&j GL2's I added some felt over the drivers to chill them out a little and after break in (need break in) I'm pretty impressed when they are driven by my note9. Not great soundstaging as they are closed, but a pretty clean, detailed, clinical sound. But driving these with my Fiio e18 surprisingly isn't that great, it seems to over drive the electrostatz driver specifically and it starts to get fatiguing and unpleasant at higher volumes. But I would endorse the GL2s for a cheap, daily, bang around set to drive from your phone, unless you're a real bass head they out perform anything in its price range imho, and quite frankly have a sound delivery that is difficult to find in the segment as many makers focus on bassy and boomy and heavily "V'd" headsets. They are refreshing for the few that will appreciate what they are.
