New poster here. Thanks MD for this forum.
For 4-5 hours or more every day for many years I've been listening to HD650s through a Aune T1. I've been rolling a Gold Lion Russian Genalex 6922 and Mullard connected via USB through a decent desktop PC.
This new ZDT appears to be an excellent upgrade.
What would people consider to be a good reasonably priced DAC that would bring out the best of this ZDT paired with my HD650s taking into consideration my intention to upgrade to HD800s in the near future.
What would you suggest for cables that would complement this?
Also does anyone know if MD fixed their pricing glitch yet?
Thanks in advance for everyone's input.

inmyhead247From comments on those very few who have the Massdrop prototypes, the ZDT Jr scales very well with higher resolving headphones such as HD800s and DACs such as the Schiit Gungnir multi-bit. Depends on your budget but a great DAC on the budget side is the Schiit Modi Multi-bit for $250. After all the great comments on the Modi MB, I upgraded to it recently from Modi1 and HRT Microstreamer and agree, its a great DAC.

domesThanks guys. Took the leap of faith and bought the ZDT and got a Schiit Multibit. Now what tubes should I get? Just like a lot of cars you buy off the lot the tires that come with it are the Schiits I know I will be getting some high quality tubes. So what tubes are people recommending?
As an aside, I tried the online demo (not the trial download) of Sonarworks to see what it would do to my HD650s and it did knock off some of what some refer to as the congenital sibilance, which is my biggest complaint with my current cans which they are known for. But not impressed. It took away more of the good side of the 650s than I liked. But it was only like a 5 minute toggle back and forth with...
So back to the tubes. Input appreciated.

inmyhead247Plenty of information to be gleaned just from reading.
I don't have an account there myself and I don't see myself ever needing one.

jxliuProbably closed to membership because it has a nice chemistry which is very hard to maintain on an open forum. The more members the more babysitting and moding. I get that. Less shilling there, more givers than takers. Not so much gloating or dick waving . The mods' egos don't seem to get in the way. My kind of place.

jxliuHow are replacement tubes ordered in future?

domesYou can order the tubes from a variety of supply houses and this amplifier is made (according to the discussions on SBAF) for inexpensive and easily avialable tubes. It uses 2 6ZH1P power input tubes and 2 6N24P (ECC89) tubes both sell for under $2 a piece. Power Tube: https://tubes-store.com/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=6J1P+%2F+6Zh1P+%2F+6AK5+%2F+EF95+%2F+6F32+tube Main tube: https://tubes-store.com/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=6N24P+%2F+6FC7+%2F+ECC89+tube
You can also purchase the tubes from Ebay but the tubes will likely source from Russia/Ukraine/Latvia

JediThank you Jedi. Voiding the Massdrop warranty on tube rolling would be for trying other tube types but using the specified type of 6J1P and 6N24P but another brand is perfectly acceptable? I was also thinking if perhaps a bad tube is included in original shipment or maybe breaks in shipment, Massdrop would send a replacement?

domesIts not that it would void the warranty, but the amplifier circuity is not designed to handle other tube types. Also, the amplifier might be serviceable by yourself if you had a meter, a soldering iron, and the wiring schematic if you tried other tubes but the manufacturer advises specifically against tube rolling. As long as the tube is sold as a 6ZH1P or a 6N24P, you will be perfectly fine to choose any manufacturer or seller that you wish. The amp was conceived as a simple but powerful DIY style amplifier built using low cost tubes so boutique tube rolling is NOT meant for this amp. If tube rolling was preferred, Laconic does make the standard ZDT amp (called the Night Blue NB-3A) but (a) it is not available for sale outside of Russia and (b) is not 110V ready (if you are US based).

Jedi@domes I'll gladly pay for better quality tubes of the right type. Not trying to pinch pennies or dick wave but looking for optimal tube selection to go with 650 or 800S cans and price, within reason, is very secondary to the selection. Any of you with some deep Senn expertise (@Marvey of SBAF?) I would love to pick your brains on this match up with the ZDTjr. There is so much I like about listening to my 650s I just would like to bring out the best in them. Since I blew my wad on the amp and dac I don't mind spending some scratch on any or all of the tubes.
Also considering the direction I'm heading , which mods would best suit my HD650 HPs?
Given that I would be guaranteed to Fk them up if I attempted to do this, where can I send them to have the mods done? Looked over the HD650 thread on mods on SBAF and see no reference to which mod would best suit the amp and where I might send them to get them done.
Thanks for any help any of you fine people can provide... oh and screw the warranty. I won't stuff anything in the ZDTjr that didn't come recommended by one of you learned folk.

JediSounds like some differences in sound are attainable with different makers of the same tube types and this would be sufficient for me. Maybe I will order a few to keep on hand during this long wait for the Jr to arrive. Thanks for your help!

inmyhead247For the Multibit, I have read to keep it powered on all the time. If powered off it will take a couple of hours to warm up and sound best . I havent turned it off since plugging it in for the first time. Also, it may take a week or so to burn in as it seemed like the sound evened out around then. I hope you have an amp to start listening to the Multibit soon.
I am a tube newbie but sounds like a reasona approach with the Jr is to buy a few different brands of the same tube types and compare once amp is available. Tube sound differences can be marginal or not depending on the tube and amp and these differences could also be personal preference.
