I'm at a loss. My winter bag is an REI Magma 10 (really EN comfort 22) which has a hair more fill yet weighs only 1 lb. It has zippers, a back, baffles, all the stuff a quilt is missing to keep it lighter. What am I missing or reading wrong ? Shouldn't a quilt weigh significantly less than a bag ?
EDIT: Just wanted to correct my mistake in this post. The new REI Magma weight 1 lb 14 oz, not 1 lb. Also the pre-2017 weights 2 lb 11.4.
EverythingIsBetterOutdoorsThe Magma 10 is an amazing sleeping bag, for sure. That's the best value mid-to-high end sleeping bag available IMO - glad you picked one up for yourself. However, it weighs nearly two pounds (1lb 14oz) and costs $100 more. More telling is that it has REI's thinnest "Fitted" cut, meaning it will be more constricting than the EE quilt. So there are a few differences that can account for the weight, but yes, REI has done a great job with their sleeping bag to make it really compelling from a cost/weight/warmth comparison with *any* other bag or quilt.
DannyMilksIn fact, I just weighed *my* magma, which is the pre-2017 one and it weight in at 2 lb 11.4 oz. Seems like this quilt would be a pound and a quarter lighter. No doubt less volume as well. Any idea what the real world comfort temperature of it would be though ?
EverythingIsBetterOutdoorsWow, is it really possible that the Magma lost nearly 1/3 of it's weight with the newest model. Do you know what they changed? The old one used 15d fabric, had 17.3 of 850 fill, and weighed 30oz.
Also curious if the total weight that REI states is accurate, because that's a very high ratio of down to total weight.
DannyMilksFolowing up - also hard to believe that the REI Magma stuffs down to a 7L stuff sack. As a comparison, EE uses 13L sacks on their 20' quilts, and 7L on their 40' quilts.
EverythingIsBetterOutdoorsSleeping bags and quilts can gain weight over time due to skin sloughing, dust, dust mites, and sometimes even retained moisture. Clean them regularly per MFG directions, and that also keeps the weight down.
