I would like to recommend that massdrop not use the blade as a banner for their name as the discounts you get do not justify the add space. For what is essentially a giant group buy the discounts are relatively anemic compared to the eventual street price. I suggest putting the massdrop name on the inside of the liner/scale or on the underside of the back space (where applicable) like custom knife makers sometimes do. This way the name is still present with out affecting the perception of value. I liken it to buying a quality brand name knife at Wallmart only to have the Wallmart name emblazoned on the side of the knife blade.
aitmikeExcept that Massdrop is like 33% of the reason this knife exists, alongside Reate and Eric Ochs. So you probably also have a problem with Ford putting their badge on the Mustang, and I think I’ll have a word with Apple about branding my phone with their logo. Oh, wait. Massdrop doesn’t put their logo on anything they don’t have a significant hand in creating- hel, look at the navigation buttons for this knife alone, what do you think “Massdrop Made” means? They don’t brand the shit they sell, just the shit they make. You know, like every other company out there. Thanks for trying, though.

Jschreiner1349Read my comment a little more carefully before you reply. Apparently you were so triggered you didn't noticed that I never said that the massdrop logo/name should not be on the knife. Btw massdrop physically makes none of the knives they brand. Your other arguments about Ford and Apple are not relevant because both of those companies manufacture the items in your example and rightfully brand them as big as they want where ever they want. But thanks for trying as well.

aitmikeThe way I view the Massdrop logo is credit to Jonas and all the other Massdrop folks that put effort into the project. Which I feel is owed to them, give credit where credit is due. Hiding the logo would be an insult to the work that the team puts in.
If you don't like it, and think it would improve the value, mod the knife. Remove the logo. It is of course yours to do what you want with after purchasing. With all the constant complaints about the logo on ALL of the Massdrop collabs you would think there is an untapped secondary market for removing the logos and reselling.

aitmikeWhile I'm not a fan of the current logo, I don't find it to be as offensive as some. I do think it would be better served if they used the "underlined M" from the massdrop app. It's a single stylized letter. It already is used by massdrop. So it's identifiable yet more subtle.
Hey Jonas, if you see this ..... Maybe run it by the powers that be and go with a single "M" or a "MD" for branding. The underlined M from the massdrop Android app looks great I would use that.

aitmikeOk, we will break it down thought by thought. So that you can see that I am reading and comprehending what you typed.
"I would like to recommend that massdrop not use the blade as a banner for their name as the discounts you get do not justify the add space."
Bullshit, you are getting a Reate Knife, designed by a well known and respected custom maker, FOR $300. Name another one I challenge you, that quality, big name designer. GO!
" For what is essentially a giant group buy the discounts are relatively anemic compared to the eventual street price."
Everything decreases in value. Resale on this will be better than most consumer items. Not sure what your point is here. This knife will hold value, in terms of percentage, better than a new car.
" I suggest putting the massdrop name on the inside of the liner/scale or on the underside of the back space (where applicable) like custom knife makers sometimes do. This way the name is still present with out affecting the perception of value. "
Pretty sure I addressed this earlier. You want Massdrop to hide their name like it is shameful. They brought the whole project together, honestly, what would it be without them?
"I liken it to buying a quality brand name knife at Wallmart only to have the Wallmart name emblazoned on the side of the knife blade. "
LOL? What quality brand knives does Walmart have ANYTHING to do with the design and production of? Do you think Walmart helps grow the pineapples they sell? This is absurd.

namhod1. Wallmart was an example (hypothetical). Wallmart like Massdrop has nothing to do with the design or manufacture of a brand name knife. 2. Some custom knife makers will sign their name on the inside of the handle/scale or on a small gold plaque on the inside of the back spacer to be viewed when the knife is opened, not to "hide" but to maintain the aesthetics ( I guarantee custom knife makers don't share your opinion that it's shameful to do so). 3. One custom knife maker that comes to mind who also did a deal with massdrop is Gavco who's massdrop knifes are also being manufactured by a high quality Chinese company. You can buy Reate knives directly from them as well as other distributors for not much more than the 300.00 price you brought up. Clearly you did not comprehend what I said because I had to explain it to you. Maybe ask some others on here if they would rather not have a massdrop billboard slapped on the side of their knife blades. You've made the mistake of reinterpreting what I said and adding your own emotional opinions (are you buddies with someone in massdrop?). You seem to be expending a considerable amount of effort railing against my comments on this matter as if it were a personal attack on you. But hey it's your time right?

aitmikeWoooo, we gonna do this again!
"1. Wallmart was an example (hypothetical). Wallmart like Massdrop has nothing to do with the design or manufacture of a brand name knife."
Errrr WALLMART. Ok. Jonas and Massdrop have a lot more invested in producing and selling these knives than you think.
I didn't ask, or even demand, any designer or company do this. You did.

This is a big one. First off, Gavko.
Which custom makers sign their name inside the handle or scale on a small gold plaque on the inside of the backspacer to be viewed when the knife is opened? OF A PRODUCTION KNIFE SELLING FOR $300? You didn't even approach my question. Name another Reate quality knife from a major designer for anywhere near this price. Clearly you didn't comprehend what I said.
Nobody is reinterpreting what you are saying, it is all being taken literally. If you don't mean what you are typing don't type it.
I agree, it is your time. Your time to chase yourself in circles and not make a point.

namhodInteresting what you choose to respond to what you choose not to respond to. I'm not going to continue to chase your ever narrowing specific requirements to the answers you will accept. Which nudges that goal post ever further with each interaction. Either you understand what I said or you don't. Clearly you will continue to choose the latter.
aitmikewalmart doesnt "produce" the knives they sell, massdrop does "produce" the massdrop made projects so their logo deserves to be on the product just as the designers logo does... as for the logo itself its as subjective as anything else. some people love it, most dont care because they get it and some hate it... obviously stuff like this gets consulted and researched extensively with big companies like massdrop and i think they know what they're doing...

GavkoKnivesI agree with what you're saying for the most part. But not once did I ever say the Massdrop name didn't deserve or shouldn't be on the knife (even though people keep thinking the opposite). As well some folks don't see a difference between producing a knife (making a deal to offer it for a group buy) and manufacturing and designing a knife. The latter of which (in my opinion) deserve more credit and by extention should get the prime locations for logo/name placement. Again, I never said the massdrop name should not be on the knife.

aitmikeMassdrop pays for the manufacturing...
aitmikecheers Mike. but massdrop was a huge part of the designing process of the final production versions, paid for all the development and prototypes and other huge investments, all the things that needed to happen for this to happen. they dont just resell something somebody else designs and somebody else made and put their name on it. they do it only on stuff they have big involvement with, thus "massdrop made"... for me personally it feels very insulting and false towards massdrop to compare them to walmart, saying its same as if walmart slapped walmart banners on the knives they sell... im not trying to be aggressive btw, just trying to shine some light and other perspective on the whole "why does massdrop have their logo on the blade". as for why WE doesnt have just as big logo there, its simple. WE is OEM manufacturer who other than their own designs also makes stuff other people order. essentially same as all the outsourced big american cutlery companies still brands their outsourced models as their own and nobody knows what company actually made them. so i think its actually nice that WE still gets nice and official credit for good products even if it isnt engraved on the knife

GavkoKnivesThe anti logo crowd will never understand this. Thanks for throwing in your thoughts, since you worked with Massdrop on a collab and have knowledge of the process!
namhodWhat does Gavko know, he's just a designer of one of the knives produced by massdrop. Obviously he would have no idea who deserves to put a logo on the side of his design.
I, for one, vastly prefer the opinion of random internet guy who thinks a "quality, name brand knife" purchased at Walmart is comparable to any of the massdrop collaborations.
