Hello, thanks for checking this out! I am truly excited about this knife project! For one, I have been watching for the last few years as Massdrop has grown and several of my friends and fellow knifemakers have done Collaboration projects with Massdrop. Maybe a little selfish but as Massdrop has matured it has been creating a pretty cool innovative legacy of collaboration knives and I wanted to be part of that.
Also, I have really wanted to do a quality production version knife. Since I live in a man cave garage much of the time making custom knives where the focus is on creating one off pieces. These come with custom prices and crafting them in limited output. The opportunity to create a production performance knife of high quality construction and materials is something I have really been looking forward to doing. When Massdrop approached me about working with them I jumped at the chance.
As we worked out the details for the collaboration the opportunity to work with Reate came up. Then at the Blade Show in Atlanta, Jonas and I reviewed the project with Reate with my prototype in hand and we checked out the knives Reate had brought to the show. From then on there has been no question in my mind that things would go well on this Orca project.
In July Jonas was up in Portland for the Northwest Handbuilt Invitational and by some stroke of good luck he had received the Prototypes form Reate the day he was leaving to come up. I had the opportunity to look at, poke, flip, shake, jiggle, prod and otherwise play with all the Protos! : ) Honestly and I seriously do not say this lightly these are better than most midtechs and some customs I have handled. In my opinion they are a super value. I you are familiar with Reate’s level of quality you know what I am talking about here.
Best of all though after playing around and sharing them around with a bunch of knowledgeable Makers & Collectors who were at the show. The only real criticism anyone had was that the thumbstuds were too sharp on the corners. This will be addressed in the production version by tumbling the T-stud in the finishing process to remove any sharp corners.
Personally I am very pleased with the way this project has come together from start to finish. I am psyched to get to work with Reate and Massdrop to offer the Orca. This model is what got my folders noticed and the original version was one of my early designs which was inspired by the great Bob Lum. It seems almost crazy to say this now but at the time the original came out there was no one else in the tactical folder world making raised swedge harpoon style blades. Now this seems like a feature in most maker’s line up somewhere.
This Orca has been redesigned and modified from the original model. It has been sized down slightly to a 3.5” Blade and the handle has been streamlined to clean the lines up and maximize blade to handle ratio making it an easy carry. It fits in my hand great and that comment came from many of the people who handled it in Portland too. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
Eric
EricOchsAs an admirer of your work, I bought one of your Alpha 2Itools from my local retailer, since I wanted an Eric Ochs production and didnt think I could ever justify the price of one of your knives. Now I can.
Thanks for making your design available through MD. I should be dissuaded from buying another knife, as I bought an expensive (to me) knife just this morning. Unfortunately I don’t think I can resist the CF and Moku-Ti.
DougFLA123I think I like it, but personally not willing to spend that much on it.
Everyone is focusing on the upgrade version, which looks great....but I think the base model sounds a bit expensive for the materials used.
I know the steel is a little more expensive, but we've all seen the prices other Ti lined G10 scaled collaborations have been done for in the past
Don't get me wrong, I know it's not a direct comparison. Different manufacturer, different designer, etc...I don't have a strong opinion on if it's a good value or not for what it is, just don't see myself paying that much for those materials. And just being cheap not wanting to invest in the upgrade, which does sound like it could be a reasonable investment
KavikWhen I first saw the upgrade price, I was kind of in shock. The upgrades on here are usually $20 or so, but the more I look at the upgraded version, the more appealing it becomes.
Are you going to take apart the Prism and show pictures of it when you get a chance to review it?
DougFLA123Same here. The upgrades are the only thing that make this one seem worthwhile, IMO
Lol of course
It's just been a super busy week. I already had it apart to test if the weak detent was related to detent ball/hole alignment (spoiler, it's not 😩 but I'll go into detail in the review, not here), but didn't have time to snap pics right then
DougFLA123There is a prototype that has shipped out to me. As soon as it arrives I will get some videos and post on IG. Give it a few days. Not trying to ignore you here just a full plate.
T.willyI don’t think he does, but I think he should! I might have to drop a few hints to one Mr. @Kavik about starting his own knife review YouTube channel! 😀
EricOchsI used to admire your Orca and Gyrfalcon and other models on the Tri-City Custom Knives website years ago when I first started exploring the world of custom knives. At that time there was definitely nothing on the market blending the design, construction and materials I see in this at this price, especially nice to see it in a liner lock. I much prefer liner locks when it comes to custom designs but they're relatively scarce in the world of mid-tech and high end production knives these days. My order is in for the marbled carbon fiber and purple Ti. I also appreciate the sculpting on the "bolster" part of the carbon as a nod to the hammed copper on a lot of the customs I used to check out. Can't wait to have it in hand!
EricOchsJust checked out your Instagram page and holy Sh*% man. I didn't know knives could look so awesome. Absolutely works of art.
I'm glad I got in on this drop and got the upgrades. Thanks for this collaboration, it's the only way I can afford to experiance your work.
EricOchsThank you for the quick response. That speaks volumes to the character of the company. Just know that if for any reason at all one of those is sent back/returned, you have yourself a very happy customer in waiting. That sky blue G10 handle with gold accents still remains the most beautiful knife I have seen to date. That along with the shape of the blade and handle. Wonderful work.
EricOchsI wouldn't be surprised if Massdrop has a few spares for another drop once the orders are filled.
I think the appeal of this knife is going to catch a lot of enthusiasts off guard. Public opinion and awareness of Massdrop knives seems to have increased quite a bit since the time of this drop, but I'm sure many are still unaware of this Orca's impending release. Once it gets into the Instagram/YouTube spotlight, I think you'll suddenly have many more fans.
EricOchsHas anyone received their knife yet? the description said Feb 28 and I haven't heard anything. anyone else shaking their head????
Ant idea one a date for delivery?
EricOchsWell the knife is here and definitely worth the wait. I have owned 1k custom liner locks with equivalent materials and this is on par if not superior in fit and finish, as I'd expect from Reate. Amazing value to be able to put an Ochs Orca built like this in my pocket for $300. A couple of comparison pics with a couple of my other favorite knives.
RBnumber3Mine just arrived as well. I really like it, action is great. fits my hand perfectly and I see myself carrying this a lot.
I'm slightly disappointed by how little the mokuti is visible on the pivot collar in your example and my own. I feel like theres just a lack of contrast between the layers compared to the product image on the site.
My knife also came with an unsightly edge grind that's a bit wavy on the heel that i'll have to clean up on my wicked edge (Sorry, Mr. Ochs, I know you worked hard to get these out the door for us and this wasn't work that you were planning on having to do).
Glad you like yours too!
GavvinCYeah I left out that the action is great, both flipping and closing, even with the knife ice cold right out of the box. I agree on fhe pivot collars. The contrast on the clip is great, but the pattern on the collars is so tight that it's hard to discern unless you look really closely, the blue is still there though, and I can't really complain too much about mokuti collars on a production knife of this price. I guess some people might prefer the tight pattern, the swirls on the prototypes we're larger though, I'm curious to see other samples. Your observation about the heel is true of mine as well, I wonder what it looked like before the touch up. In any case, the knife is a reasonable size, has good ergos for my hand, and a nice high grind. So it will actually be a very good carry knife in addition to being beautiful. Also still less to complain about than knives I've had for 3 times the price.
GavvinCI look forward to seeing your review on the production version, I watched a couple on the pass around. One thing I'd like to point out about the heel grind, thinking about it more I know exactly why it turned out that way and it's not being sloppy, it was just the simplest fix. From the start of the sweeping plunge the stock got a bit thicker, including that last bit of the edge, but all of it was sharpened at the same angle. So straight from Reate that last quarter inch of bevel on each side probably didn't meet in the middle and created the unsharpened "triangle" as it widened that some people are probably familiar with already. So, taking that into account, the three ways to correct it would be to reprofile the entire edge and take off more material, regrind the plunge to take off more material and then re-finish the blade, or what was done, re-profile that last quarter inch or so at a steeper angle so all of it cuts. Considering the 300+ knives and the fast turn around, and the fact that @EricOchs and the team saw this as something worth the time to fix, I can't really complain at all. That's my take on the situation anyway, and an educated guess on what exactly happened. Based on how good a carry knife this is shaping up to be, most of them will probably end up with a new edge soon enough anyway.
RBnumber3That pretty much sums it up right there. I am sure had we left these there would have been a number of comments on that and it would have posed more work to fix using an edge system verses one of my grinders. I hope this works out for most people, that is what we were trying for.
Regards,
Eric
EricOchsI certainly appreciate the work you and massdrop put in to fix up the heel of the blade :) Less of a complaint towards your work, and any complaint I have is geared towards Reate not finishing the edges on their knives. I have a few examples of reate knives from the factory where the edge is not sharpened all the way down in the exact spot you corrected on this one. Its troubling that this seems to be an issue with their factory edges but its nothing a little love wont fix! I love your knife so far!
EricOchsThanks for the confirmation, and the extra effort! It definitely works for me, and those sweeping curved plunge grinds are actually one of the features I've always admired on your customs, so I appreciate it here too even if it lead to some extra work.
GavvinCYeah I've seen this point about the "triangle" raised on other Reate models, including Liong Mah designs. Whatever their standard method is seems to produce that result. My Liong Mah Eraser seems to have had this flaw designed out by ending the cutting edge well ahead of the plunge, so I don't have a good example of it on hand, but I've seen it. Regardless, they're still the best OEM out there. No other brand I've owned has produced this level of overall fit and finish consistently.
T.willyYes, but not until April at least. We'll have to go through the same process of inspection and sharpening on those units before they can be released.
JonasHeinemanRight that makes sense. Thanks for the response. Why I've got you here Jonas can I ask are there any new Releases of Massdrop Made Colaberasion Knives scheduled for release this month or next? I'm really itching to buy a new one lol.😂
EricOchsHey ErichOchs,
I would really like to buy your new beautiful knife in that amazing blue mokuti finish but I am skeptical whether or not it would pass customs here in Western Australia as our knife laws are extremely strict. Since you offer shipping to Australia I was wondering if there have been any issues with people here in Australia buying your knife, and whether or not your knife has passed customs and been delivered to customers in Australia?
Thanks for your help,
Ivan
JonasHeinemanWow I cannot believe you guys would issue a refund if it got seized, that was truly unexpected. Thankyou so much and I will be sure to order one of your beautiful knives in the next day or two :)
Ivan.MWe can only do that bc the seizure rate is so low - if it creeps up (looking at you, Canada!) then we may not be able to sustain that policy forever. Strike while the iron is hot, friends!
JonasHeinemanBite you tongue Jonas!!😲 😓 Just Kidding I understand if it got too bad you couldn't continue. I'm just greatful for the time being were good to go.✌
JonasHeinemanIs this "deal" still going on for Canada too?
I've been eyeing that Knife for at least a Year now and was always afraid that because of the flipper, it could get Seized And I can't find one in Canada...
(How stupid is it I can order a knife with a flipper online from Canada just fine but if I buy Internationally, it might get seized...)
If that's the case, I'm afraid I can't resist and might even go for a MokuTi model...(it's my favorite look and with that blade shape and material...how can I say no?)
Thanks!
Potvin.FYes your good to go. If you ever have any questions like this in the future I'd suggest you go to the help section of the website and ask the customer service department. I've used them several times in the past and there hands down the best I've ever delt with in the knife bissness. Main reason though is you get an answer in a few hours or possibly a day rather then 6 weeks later lol.✌
NarqI feel your pain. I was ambidextrous and would have been left handed if my teachers had let me but I was forced to be right handed in school.
If you can get all the lefties interested in this knife to agree on which version of it they like I can try again to work something out. Problem is with all the options there is no easy choice and producing 10 doesn't work. But I am sympathetic to the idea. Sorry you feel left out that was not my point with these.
Thanks,
Eric
EricOchsYour empathy is welcome. Even if left out, I am nonetheless impressed with your knives. And your offer is a kind gesture. Us lefties just have to adapt and survive! Thank you for the response.
