Hey everyone,
It’s been almost a year since we launched the Falcon, our first collaboration with Ferrum Forge, and about six months since we launched the Gent, our third collaboration and most recent new model. In between, we launched the Crux - all of these have been exciting, and well-received by the community...but, if you know the FFKW guys, you know they like to push the envelope when it comes to big knives with bold lines and aggressive blades. This fourth collaboration with Chris and Elliot of Ferrum Forge has been in the works for quite awhile, and we’re glad we can finally share it with the community.
Elliot’s design for this knife was inspired by Asian cavalry sabres. At the back, the Buc's prominent lanyard hole is derived from the ring at a sword's pommel which allowed horse-mounted soldiers to retain control of their weapons in battle by keeping them tied to their wrists with silk or cloth. The blade’s broad tip helps to generate momentum - originally, this was to build force when swinging a sword at enemies while riding. While we hope this is not your primary use for the Buc, it does make for a swift and satisfying deployment.
“Okay, so why is it called the Buc?” Fair question... we thought it looked like a pirate saber, so we came up with Buc, short for Buccaneer. We’re aware there is a long history of curved swords between the introduction of scimitars to Asia by Turkish cultures around 1100 to 1200 AD and their use much later in the Carribean seas by swashbuckling pirates during the 18th and 19th centuries. This evolution may not exactly be linear, and we welcome an exploration of the history and evolution of edged weapons in the discussion.
My point here is: we think this chopper looks awesome, it’s got great flipping action, and it’s just as useful as it is cool. New and noteworthy for this latest Massdrop x FFKW design are 1) contrasting colors on the clip and backspacer, and 2) opening near the spine to allow for opening with a finger flick.
A few housekeeping notes on this drop:
* The special price of $114.99 will only be offered on this first pre-production drop. The regular price will be $124.99. * Serial numbers will be preceded by a color code: G for Gray, L for Blue, Z for Bronze. * This first drop is limited to 1500 total units, but there is not a limit per color. * We’re allowing four months for production and shipping after the drop ends, so our estimated ship date is August 31st, 2018.
Thanks for checking it out, and for making this possible!

JonasHeinemanWill the drop conclude early if we hit the 1200 mark?
About 750 sold in the first two days makes me think we can probably clear out the initial run of 1200 well before the original end date.
ETA- 850 on day three!

JonasHeinemanHey Jonas, Is this slippery in the hand? I'm always dubious about all-metal handles.

InkdependenceIf it's like the last two it will have a kind of bead blasted finish that starts out quite grippy and chalky, and eventually through handling will smooth out and feel kind of 'soft', but still more grippy than raw titanium like your typical Kizer.

JonasHeinemanDo you think it might be possible to get a better shot of the version with the blue handles. I've read several times that people are having trouble getting a good idea of what they look like. I've already bought one so I'm in Ether way but it would be nice to have a clearer idea of how it's going to look. Ether way thank you for your time Jonas. Trevor ✌

T.willyMaybe wrap it in a cloth and rub it for awhile? The feeling was awful to me at first, but I did grow to appreciate even the earlier feel of the finish by the end of it.

OmniseedYeah I was thinking of useing a cloth too but then I got thinking maybe there's something to put on the cloth to speed things up a bit. I'm probably better off just wearing it down by putting it to use . Like you say it's not bad once you get used to it. BTW Is it just me or does the end of August seem like a long way away😟😩😨 lol

T.willy I know exactly what you mean about the willies from it. Stuff makes my tongue swell up like I can’t talk and makes my hair stand up on my arms and neck lol. But it definitely did go away for me and smoothed way out after about 3-4 days of carrying it as my main work knife.

T.willyIs it a low quality titanium or just the blasted finish?

Apr 9, 2018
McJimmisIf you mean which of the two are the reason for the Chalky feeling of the knife I'm not sure but I would hazard a guess that it's do to the blasted finish. Especially since I've owned a few We knives and I've never seen anything low quality about them. Hope that helps answer your question. ✌

McJimmisIt's far from low quality, it starts out feeling chalky but settles into a very distinctive soft feeling. It's good.

JonasHeinemanHi Jonas sorry to ask this question twice but it's been a week so I thought maybe it got over looked. Is there a possibility of getting a better look at the Blue Scale version with the gray pocket clip. I've already ordered one but would still like a clearer idea of how it looks. Thanks Trevor

T.willyI've let our photo team know that you and others have requested this, but I'm not sure they will be able to get any done before the drop ends. We'd like to give more angles on every color, especially as our offerings in Blades grow to have more variation, but there's only so much room on the page - will do my best on this for ya.

OmniseedSorry I missed this earlier...
Yes, drops end early if the limit is reached. That doesn't change the Estimated Ship Date, but sometimes it does help us to deliver them a little bit ahead of schedule.
In this case, we've been able to make 300 additional units available, but we are not extending the drop end date - so the drop will end in about a week, or if we sell out before then.
JonasHeineman

Apr 17, 2018
T.willyActually...we've been able to make 300 more units available. The drop is unlikely to run out, but based on production schedules it's unlikely that ending early would have affected the ship time on this one.

LastCrowOnTheWireNot on this specific drop, but I'd guess there'll be about 250 available in mid-September. This drop was limited to 1500 pieces, so that's probably the size of the order to WE Knives. If memory serves, there were about 1250 on the initial drop. MD will commonly make a smaller followup drop out of the inventory they've got on hand, with a very quick turnaround. Make sure you request this knife, so you'll get notification when the drop's about to start.
Blackfoot_FlashWill do! Thanks for the info
JonasHeinemanStill waiting to get in on this, any extras for the folks who missed the initial drop?

LastCrowOnTheWireNo offense man, but asking the same questions over and over here isn't going to make any difference in when it drops again.
If they have extras from this batch they aren't going to release them until all current owners have theirs in hand and have time to see if any quality issues come up that require replacements. Once they're satisfied that they're done with any needed returns/exchanges then they'll most likely start the next batch (assuming there were enough requests to warrant an immediate next run) so there is a lower wait time on the subsequent drop.
This is just my opinion based on previous "MD made" drops I've watched. The Prism dropped again real quick, but in most cases there is a delay.
Best you can do is hit the request button and wait for the email alert... Or watch the comments to see if anyone decides to resell after getting theirs in hand

KavikI agree 100% the only other thing I'd add is after the original buyer's all have there knives and if you can't find one up for grabs through here Check The Exchange on BladeForums that's a great spot to pick up all kinds of knives at a fair price. I often see the other Massdrop Colaberasion knives up for sale on there. Good luck Lastcrowonthewire.👍😎

LastCrowOnTheWireThey always ship existing orders before they reopen the drop for people who want to get in on it after the fact.
You've got about a week, maybe two.
