GunmonkeyNice. I've been teetering on the fence a little. I think you may have pushed me over. Just need to figure out how to make it work with the new ZT's I want too. 💵🤑 Boy am I going to be in the doghouse. 😬
Gunmonkeyplease do, I’m trying to get a size comparison of the handle to the Falcon. The falcon is too small for me so hoping there is 1/2” more room on this.
McJimmisNot sure if you've seen this or not, yet, but it was posted by FF on their instagram. It shows a size comparison of all the MassForge knives so far.
DOTDJoeyYeah, I don't know about releasing them like that, I completely missed those drops. But, like McJimmis has said, I do know for sure that FF was/is doing custom finish options for folks who are willing to send their knives in, wait, and pay a fee. I believe the all black is an option they do offer or have offered in the past.
RandomsmackPretty sure it will. It is a very sweet mid sized blade. Next time it drops, don't let them get away without snagging one. I really thought they'd be selling the in-stock overrun from first batch by now.
@JonasHeineman , hint hint. 😁
Unless they are taking more time to retool the Crux based on my mods. 🤯 yeah, like that would ever happen. 🤪 Anyway, the blade choil is only good for petite dainty fingers. So I ground mine out to the same size as the Falcon. Then I added just a little more room on the front scale lock access recess. Now much better thumb purchase on the lockbar. Then I rounded off the top of the lock bar where the thumb lands. Relieved the sharp edge that dug into my thumb when unlocking.
Now my Crux is one of my all time favorites in its size and use range. Sweet action, solid lockup, and pain free unlocking. Not to mention an amazing grip with either standard frame grip, or choked up into choil.
DougFLA123The cool thing about anodizing is that every time you see it in different light, you see different colors and shadows. My ZT0801 was just done in a darker blue everywhere. Then the flats sanded down to a near polish and ano'd in bronze. Because of the smooth finish on the flat, the new color is more that of gold or polished brass.
A good example of how surface finish and prep affects ano color is on my ZT0055. I started with it pretty close to factory finish, then etched it to maintain matte tones and texture in all the milled recesses. Then the flats were sanded out to 3000+ grit. Don't remember if I spent any time on 5000 grit.
So the Mint Green color maintains a pretty consistent color in most pics. But the "Purple"? Well, see for yourself. Find the 0055....
theoristThank you very much. I appreciate the compliment. I've thought that maybe sometime in the future , knife sharpening, anodizing, and leatherwork could be a fun retirement job. But for now I just keep things in hobby mode. Although my wife would like me to charge for some things I do now so she wouldn't have to work. So far, the only thing I've charged for were some custom holsters and mag pouches I made in the past.
That being said, if you have something you'd like to have done, let me know. It could be a fun project.
I also need to start selling some of my knives to afford new models that have caught my eye. That's something I haven't even considered until recently. So if anything in my pics are of interest, maybe I'd be willing to let something go. Except for disco'd models, couldn't bring myself to let any of those go just yet.
BflyingHave you ever owned a ZT 0450? How would you compare the Crux vs the ZT or rather which do you prefer?
Obviously the Crux isn't available at the moment but trying to decide between Buc vs Crux vs ZT 0450.
BrumledbSho nuff. The Crux and 0450 are both very similar in overall size, but that is where the similarities end. The Crux is much thicker, in grip, slab thickness, and blade thickness. The 0450 has a bit of learning curve to find the sweet spot for opening. Though I've heard people complain about the same thing with the Crux. It's really not a bad thing, it just is what it is. Once you find your perfect grip, then it'll never again be an issue.
I would consider the ZT to be a bit more refined. One of my favorite "Gent" knives". And if you ever need warranty or parts in the future, hands down ZT kicks butt in a big way. With Massdrop, anything other than a major flaw or catastrophic failure, in the hands of ONLY the original purchaser, then you are SOL. Individual parts are not even an option. But on the plus side with Massdrop, they have been known to do an occasional hot swap. If all the warranty boxes are checked and you meet them all, they may send out a new item (if available), and you can return the warranty item when received.
But will say that I do like both for very different reasons. I have enough knives now that I find myself less often comparing knives of different brands against each other. And now simply comparing any specific knife against its advertised strengths, my specific needs, and/or wants.......And whether or not it meets those qualities.
In some cases I could grab a half dozen knives meant to compete with (or beat out) each other, and I end up liking them all for completely different reasons. One excels at x, while the next at y. Therefore I can never part with any, yet seldom use them either. Yup, I'm broken. 🤕😂
