I got my Falcon a couple of days ago. #420, go figure. Rather than writing a review I made a video. I kept it as short as I could and didn't tell you anything you already know.

Toolbox-of-Truth I had received my Falcon #214. Your video is the exact reflection of the problem of this knife. It is very hard to close because the detent is very hard! For me the promise of the pre productions video clip to get a soft knife to open and close is not kept. In addition the knife seems extremely solid and the materials used of excellent quality.

mikael22There is a detent when closing that is very stiff. I didn't show it in my video but I probably should have. The good news is that detent to close seems to be wearing in. The detent to open has not gotten any easier.

Toolbox-of-TruthWhy did you buy a flipper knife if you prefer a thumb opening knife? And not to be rude but you seem a bit awkward or even a bit clumsy handling knives in general. Are you fairly new to knives? Have you ever owned a flipper knife before? It just seems to me based on the video that a lot of your issues are due to lack of experience/handling of a flipper knife (except the closing part as I agree it's harder than it needed to be). Again not trying to be a dick, I've just handled knives for along time and that was my take away from watching and listening to your video.

aitmikeHey aitmike. No offense taken. No one makes high end thumb opening knives. Ferrum Forge knives are so close. They make thumb holes in a lot of their blades, but they don't function because they always use the flipper system. I would really like to see them design a functional high end thumb hole knife. It would take so little effort on their part. No, I'm not new to knives and I own a lot of flippers. Flippers are boring to me because the presentation of a flipper is so dull compared to a good wrist flick. For that video I was holding the camera with my left hand, operating the knives with my right, all while trying to keep the shot centered, focused and steady. My grace was definitely subpar. It's also my first video like this.

Toolbox-of-TruthI get it, but I think your exposure to the high end knife market is not as extensive as you seem to think. There are more high end and custom knives out there that are thumb opening than flipper. It's also been my experience that a well made flipper is much faster to deploy than a wrist flick. But if you really want fast I suggest a knife with a wave opener.

aitmikeI'm not going for deployment speed so much as I'm going for style of presentation. I also greatly value the ease of closing one handed safely and quickly. Please point me to the high end thumb openers you know of that do these things well. I would really appreciate it. I don't doubt you have more experience than me. Also, I hope I have been clear. I love the Falcon. For what it is it is amazing, I have no regrets buying it, and I think it is worth more than the price we paid. I'm just looking for the same thing we all are: The perfect knife for me. Ferrum Forge could make that perfect knife for me, and the purpose of my post and video is to let them know that myself and other people like me would love to buy a knife like I described if they made it. They seem like really cool people and responsive to the community.

Toolbox-of-TruthThere are tons of great thumb openers out there. One of my favorites for the price is the Spyderco Slysz Bowie. Benchmade's 940 series is good too and Zero Tolerance has quite a few models that are of high quality for the price. Chris Reeves Sebenza line of knives has one of the biggest fan bases out there for a thumbstud folder in the $400-$500 price range and are built to last. His Inkosi and Umnumzaan knives are equally as good. Moving into the custom knives arena and the skies the limit. One of my favorites under $1K is Jason Guthrie's Scout. LOVE THIS KNIFE! Perfect size, design and deployment is like butter. There are tons of great knives out there. Take a look on Bladeforums.com and usualsuspect.net but be careful not to fall down the slippery slope. ;)

HeatmiserSorry, I meant to say thumbhole opener, not thumb opener. I've considered getting a small Senenza 21. I'm just not a huge fan of thumb studs. The ergonomics of Spydercos do not work for me. I don't get the blade opening control I am looking for. I've had the ZT450 in my Amazon cart for a year now, trying to pull the trigger. I wish it wasn't a flipper.
Do you know of any thumbhole knives similar to the Falcon with a functional thumb hole and can be one hand closed without a compete grip change?

Toolbox-of-TruthOkay. That narrows down the field considerably. Still, there are plenty of options out there. If you are looking for an actual round hole like Spyderco, Filip De Leeuw of Deviant Blades makes some awesome knives. My favorite hole deployment knife under $1K would be Clyde Challenor's Talon. I still highly recommend checking out Bladeforums.com to look around as there are still tons of options for you.

Toolbox-of-TruthYou're putting your hand on the pocket clip, and by extension the detent. Put the base of the knife against the palm of your hand when you push the flipper tab and don't squeeze laterally. Squeezing it like that would make the detent super hard and very gritty.
That being said, you seem super awkward with the knife in general. I open my Ontario carter prime 300+ times a day because I fidget like a lunatic sometimes, but it's never taken me that long to open or close it.
At 2:36 you can see you're pressing against the clip while trying to disengage the liner lock, effectively doing 0 work because you're just pushing against yourself. Then at 2:40 it looks like you got it open no problem because you put the butt of the knife against your hand instead of squeezing it.
Look at Michael Emler's finger placement when deploying the knife, during which he has no issues.
He's also a knife sharpener who's sharpened (so I'd estimate) thousands of knives by now - and he works directly with ferrum forge in Cali. And he attested to how nice it was.
He also puts his middle finger in the hole and flips it at 9:22 with no issues...

Toolbox-of-TruthYou say in the video that when your in front of people, you like to open your knife loudly and snap it open with authority, why is that?

Toolbox-of-TruthYou may laugh at me, but being hard to open (with one hand) is perfect, since here in Germany you can't carry a Knife that locks when open and is able to open with one hand...its against the Law. But if i need 2 Hands to open it, its allowed....yeah....lousy laws.
