Hey everyone,
We wanted to provide some additional context to the conversation around the pocket clips on the Falcon (which is the same design as used on Crux).
We’ve been reading comments here in the discussion and monitoring the support requests for this drop closely, and have found the total number of clip-related claims is under 0.5% for 2500+ knives delivered.
While the data doesn’t show us there is a widespread problem with the design, we recognize that members were looking for a bit more flexibility.
So, based on your feedback, we’ll be taking the following actions:
1) Introduce a modified clip design on upcoming releases of Ferrum Forge Falcon, Crux, and any future models that are designed to be compatible with this clip style beginning in 2018.
2) Make replacement clips available for purchase, also beginning in early 2018. We hope to sell them for $20 or less, and to keep them in stock if there’s continued interest.
3) Provide a $5 credit toward the purchase of a replacement clip for anyone who purchased a Falcon or Crux with original clip design. Credits will be given automatically to any members who join the first drop for replacement clips, in the form of a refund issued when the drop ends.
Thanks to everyone for helping to make a great knife even better. We’ll send an email to everyone who’s purchased a Falcon when the updated clips are available. Here's a rough preview and comparison of the old/new designs:

JonasHeinemanJonas, I'm so glad you guys are doing this. I love my two knifes- but after bending the clip in the first three days I was so bumbed. In fact - I was going to delete the site just because I didn't want to see drops all day - but I kept it as one of the guys was talking about getting new clips made. Anyway, thanks for addressing this and offering a solution. My last little gripe is that a sub 1% reported failure rate at this early date from the drop wouldn't make a toyota engineer stoked. Just saying - but thanks - Eric

EricWilmannsYW, thanks for the reply. We're glad to be a part of the community driving improvements like this - and at light speed, compared to say, a Toyota :) which only sees major model changes every 4-5 years. It's also cool to see folks making deep carry clips; personalization is a big part of any enthusiast/collector community.

EricWilmannsThank you! All I ask is to have the new design stress tested before making it official. Would hate to have a bunch be made and still have issues.
Would also like to see in the future... No free spinning screws and additional bevel or the lock release area for easier access in the lockbar.

JonasHeinemanThanks Jonas! I have to say Massdrop's customer service continues to impress me. Love seeing companies standing behind their products, looking for ways to improve them and addressing customers requests. I'll be in for a new clip when they drop.

JonasHeinemanAfter doing a finite element analysis on the new design, studies are showing it to have almost no improvement in durability.

CahadinI can see some high stresses going to the small radius near the head of the clip. Not sure why the radius was decreased so much, even the radius near the tip of the clip is really tight...

CahadinThat's why you need to bump it up to the infinite element analysis. I suggest aleph-1 over aleph-0. (Kidding, kidding.)
JonasHeinemanHi, is the current drop (Dec 28th release) coming with the new clip? Thanks.

JonasHeinemanJonas,. I too am really glad you are stepping up to improve the product line. But have a question how warranty will blend in. I have one clip on my Falcon that has not snapped, but instead, slowly bending outward. At this point, it still functions, but does not stay in the exact placement, and moves around a lot on the pocket. And the clip on my Crux seems fine as of now. But it has not had the pocket time of the Falcon just yet.
So should I expect one v2.0 clip under warranty for my Falcon, and one discounted v2.0 clip for my still functioning Crux?
@JonasHeineman
BflyingSorry, but I'm not sure that I can answer that one, as individual warranty situations will need to be addressed by our support team - the best info for this will come from a help ticket via "My Transactions" now or when the clips are ready.

JonasHeinemanWill do. [Strikethrough]👊🏻👍🏻[/strikethrough].
Update: Taking back my fist bump and thumbs up, and replacing with a BIG 👎🏻 . As Massdrop has decided not to honor their "amazing" warranty with the clips. Even though they state that clip issues only affect a fraction of one percent of delivered knives, they are redesigning the clip for the next production run, and giving those with warranty claims the "opportunity" to purchase at full retail price (less an insignificant discount).
I'm starting to get a bad taste in my mouth for anything with Massdrop's logo on it. I actually like the knives that FF designed, and WE did a great job of production. But Massdrop pretty much fails at being the "brand".

JonasHeinemanI think this is a good start, but it might also make sense to offer a regular loopover type deep carry titanium clip in the same drop. Maybe you can get in touch with one of the etsy sellers making them.
The bending out happens to every cnc titanium clip eventually, or the clip is too tight to use.

JonasHeinemanI just wanted to add my name here as someone who bent his clip today. I had not seen the discussions here, and tried wearing it in my back pocket for the first time. Bad Idea.

heddSo when I was taking the clip off, I stripped the longer screw. I think it was loctited in. There is some kind of brown residue in there. Luckily, I managed to get it out without too much damage.
My question is: Is the longer clip screw also holding the scale on? I can't put that screw back in for now. It all seems pretty tight, but it be safer to wait for a replacement screw?
Thanks.

JonasHeinemanI have concerns that this new clip will fully fix the issues. Molded clips are really hard to get right, I suggest going the route of a spring clip which is more practical, though usually less attractive.

This guy sells regular loopover style deep carry titanium clips (when the store is in operation). I think i'm just going to go in that direction.

JonasHeinemanIf our clips are bent, can we get the new modified clip for free as part of the warranty?

MassdrpprI was told flat out NO. They have chosen to selectively not warranty their poor clip design. But, when available, you will have the OPPORTUNITY to pay nearly 20% of your original knife purchase to replace the faulty part on your own. Kind of gives you a warm fuzzy feeling to be part of the Massdrop family, doesn't it?. 😁🤪

BflyingSorry about that; as I just posted above and replied to @Massdrppr, we're glad to cover these under warranty, but we didn't get a lot of extras to begin with so we're out right now. We've got some new ones on the way and we'll take care of ya.

CujobobThese are CNC-milled, and you are correct. Definitely a case of aesthetics vs. function. We try to strike a balance, and I think the v2 will do just that. Thanks for the feedback!

Jan 13, 2018
heddYes, it is. If you submit a support ticket, we can send you specs to replace yourself and we're meeting next week to discuss how to handle replacement parts, which we don't stock many of. TBH, this is new territory for us - all other custom goods that we've sold before knives are not really the same - they don't have small, inexpensive parts that are worth replacing instead of just replacing the whole product, if that's even possible. So thanks for helping us to solve a larger issue, and we'll do our best to help you for this specific item.

PigmonkeYThe logistics of offering multiple clip styles is quite an undertaking, for a number of reasons. We support our designers' decisions, and appreciate that they have worked with us to refine them on a fast turnaround. We also support the makers who are offering alternatives, and it's not out of the question that you might see them offered in drops on the site at some time in the future.

JonasHeinemanNo doubt the logistics are a nightmare. My clip gave up the ghost the other week, so I went in the deep-carry loopover direction. I'll report back with how it works out, anyways.
I'm just wary of actually getting the screws out. I already stripped out an (admittedly old) wiha bit on it, and am waiting on a replacement. Maybe i'll hit it with a heat gun for a bit first.
