Hi,
I finally bit the bullet and ordered the Elex . Of course , I now need to get a good amp for it .
I am currently looking at getting either the Topping DX7s or the Alex Cavelli Tube Hybrid. Appreciate any feedback on my choices above or is there any other amp that I should also be looking into as I have until May 22 before it ships.
Thanks again for your response and feedback.
GrowlitheI have been very impressed with the CTH amp, it's a really good value for the money. I can't say how well it would pair with the Elex but it should be good for dynamic headphones in general. I do like the CTH better with the Schiit Modi Multibit over the SDAC but the SDAC isn't bad.
GrowlitheI've never tried the Valhalla 2 so I couldn't say. I've tried a Jotenheim paired with a Yggdrasil which sounded amazing (with HD-6XX). I need to take a trip to LA and try more of their products. I'm hoping the Gumby will be close enough that I don't need to splurge on the Yggy.
It's also worth noting that we all have different taste, there are some popular amp/headphone parings that I didn't like at all, Bottlehead Crack paired with HD-6XX for example. If it's possible to go to meetups that's your best bet to discover your preferences without wasting a bunch of time/money on purchasing and either returning or selling on eBay. That said, going with something that is well loved (like the CTH) does increase your odds of liking it too. I wouldn't recommend it for planars, it's hit and miss there. I found the CTH works well with the HE-4XX but sounds terrible with the LCD-2c. It sounds great with the HD-6XX and HD-800s. Rumor has it the amp was tuned to pair well with Sennheiser which matches my experience.
loadexfaI currently have a HE400 so your comment about the CTH not faring well with planar is a sticking point.
Unfortunately , auditioning the Valhalla 2 is out of the question ( Schiit dont have dealer where I am staying ) so I will have to peruse the internet to understand if the Val 2 pairs well with planars and dynamic headphones .
Thanks for your feedback.
GrowlitheIn general OTL tube amps are not good for planars but there are some exceptions. Supposedly the Valhalla 2 is an exception that should sound equally good on planars. Another one is the La Figaro 339 which is excellent with everything I've thrown at it. It's more expensive though (around $675 when it drops, closer to $900 elsewhere). I have both a work and home setup and plan which headphones go where accordingly (CTH at work, La Figaro at home). I plan to get some solid state amps for each location too and joined the THX drop.
Amp pairing with headphones tends to be an important factor, you may end up buying more than one amp to get the most out of your headphone collection. This is an expensive hobby. :)
alvargThanks to all your feedback and suggestion . The CTH seems to consensus . If that is the case, then it would seems that the Cavalli Liquid Carbon X would be an even better choice.
Since the Elex will not ship until 22nd May , I can wait until the for the drop ( if there is going to be one ) . I hope that enough people requested for it.
