I have some personally modded t50rps (zmf angle pads, mayflower mod kit with custom changes, custom painted and detachable custom cables), the hd6xx and the fostex thx00 ebonies. I am pairing them with a Jotunheim amp with the balanced dac module inside. The ebonies pair so well with the Jotunheim. The HD6xx, not so much. I have the t50rps modded with a balanced cable and i really like their sound (since I tuned them for me) however they are not as resolving as the ebonies. The tuning of the ebonies are so great (i am using hm5 hyrid pads right now). I feel like the hd6xx tonality is slightly more realistic, the sounds is a bit quicker, and the instrument separation is a smidge greater. The t50rps have insane instrument separation and the bass is very close to the depth and quantity of the ebonies. I really love that about them although some might say it loses musicality like that. My first headphones that got me into this hobby were some behind the neck sennheisers paired with my Rio Karma. My second pair was hd555 with the 595 mod. Those headphones i really enjoyed. So I am surprised that I am not a big fan of the hd6xx. Something sounds off. Although this could be a pairing issue since everyone says to go with tubes. Before my final decision I am going to make a balanced 6xx cable as well as mod the ebonies for detachable cables and make a balanced cable for them as well.

CyphreIn this picture I am using the HM5 Hybrid pads. However, I exclusively use ZMF angle pads since they sound the best to me with my custom tuning. I am actually selling these. They split the difference between the hd650s and the Fostex ebony. A little more lively than the ebony, more subbass than the 650. Better instrument separation than either. Wider soundstage than the Fostex. i actually has double sided sticky taped a hd650 headband pad. These are quite comfortable. These are my favorite pair out of the 3 but I am selling everything and going the expensive custom IEM route.

UzuzuTo be exact, it's the Fostex RP series are discussing. Even when my T50RP MK3 headphones were stock with just different ear pads, the instrument separation was better than the HD650. What is you personal experience with the Foster RP series that makes you an expert to know this with such certainty?

sirkuttinMy personal experience falls in line with my comment. Even pro modded ones selling for 900 don't reach 650 level, shrugface.

UzuzuWell, now I am wondering if it's just us having different definitions of instrument separation. When I listen to my T50RP every instrument sounds like it is playing all by itself. Every instrument is completely separate from one another. This isn't about soundstage. I know your comments are specific to the T50RP, but when I just searched Planar Magnetic benefits (to make sure I am not just crazy), instrument separation is the first benefit listed in Tyll's article. I've had 4 others audition my HD6xx and the T50RPs and they all noticed what I am talking about. Maybe I had a bum pair of 6xx? I actually sold the 6xx because I didn't like them much.

UzuzuYeah i didn't want to buy a special amp just for the HD650 so I just used my Jotunheim which probably isn't a good match. Either way, I don't want picky headphones like that anyway.

sirkuttinJotunheim should sound pretty good amping the 650. 650 just sounds a bit better with the color of a tube though, but it can still be very nice out of SS. I run mine out of a Lyr 2.
