OK, got my Ebony pair!
I have four questions for existing users...
1. Build - literally there is no clamping force; I am used to having headphones squeeze me a bit more, and I am worried about getting a solid seal (I am not saying that I am getting a bad seal, but that this is different than I am used to). Is this normal?
2. Build - there is a blemish on the right earcup. Looks like the earcup was dented (or imperfect to start with, and the stain/lacquer applied over the imperfection). Is this normal since wood is a natural product?
3. Sibilance... so I am somewhat sensitive to this, and I find sibilance in the mids/higher mids. I have tinnitus (a lasting gift from a run-in with meningitis) which may make it worse for me. I have read that others have noticed this sibilance as well. Are there any mods just to tame the sibilance?
4. Vocals... I also find some graininess, particularly noticeable in vocals... Music is flac format from Tidal. Note - no burnin yet, raw impressions. Am I the only one (maybe I have a bad pair),or is this addressed by burnin? Any mods to address this if it is a real and permanent problem?

jsmiller58That’s a tough one, the wood is normal, even mine has a blemish. Think u should get the Sennheiser HD650/HD6XX as it is smoother in the upper frequencies or even an Oppo PM3 If u really want a sealed headphone.

DenonFanboyThanks for the suggestion! I have my eye on the HD6XX as well as the HD 660S. I thought about the Oppo PM-3 but those pads look fit for leprechauns only and I think I am more in the elephant family by comparison (my NAD Viso HP50s are instruments of torture as a reference)... :-)

jsmiller58I have both the Mahogany and the Ebony. I guess I got lucky because they're both perfect with no blemishes. Both have about equal clamp force and both are fine for me. They don't fit like my HD 600s and HD 650s which would both stay on my head while riding a roller coaster but they aren't anything approaching what I'd call loose.
I bought a Mayflower O2/ODAC Rev B ( 1x and 3.3x gain ) specifically for these as my Asus Xonar STX has a 10 ohm output impedance making it unsuitable for driving anything under about 80 ohms. I've only had the Ebonies a few days but they sounded amazing out of the box to me. No sibilance and certainly no grainy vocals.
Now...do I really need the Purpleheart? :P

anort3That is awesome that these are so great that you're thinking of going for the trifecta!!
I really want to like these, and will let them burn in for a while and then do at least the foam rotation mod. Then we'll see!
I also got in on the latest E-mu Teak drop, so I will be able to do around and build compare.
Happy listening!!

jsmiller58You might want to try something other than your phone. Like I said I've only had the Ebonies a few days but the O2/ODAC made a huge difference with the Mahoganies. They have plenty of volume out of my portable devices ( Fiio M3 / Fiio Q1 ) but the O2 really gives the mids that addictive liquid quality that these Fostex variants do so well. Instrument separation and soundstage is also better.

anort3Thanks for the suggestion!!
I am actually just starting to think about the kit I need for both a desktop rig as well as for higher quality portable listening...
Thinking about the Fiio x5 or x7, or even DX200 for portable. The v30 is a decent audio phone, so maybe I just need a portable amp, but I am thinking about the future when I have something other than the v30 and something dedicated might be a better source... I am a real noob (clearly more dollars than sense), but would I need a separate portable amp for one of those DAPs?
I also need to figure out a desktop setup and I am really confused. On the one hand a nice combo DAC/AMP would be convenient, but if I buy separate components I can pick to my liking and upgrade in pieces... MD currently has the Massdrop x THX AAA 789 which looks interesting amp to my untrained eye, but then I need a DAC...
So many decisions, so little knowledge, and so much less self control!!!

jsmiller58u need a DAC, a amp and it needs to be portable? Chord mojo fits the bill for sure, I would check it out, it won tons of awards and is slightly warm sounding which will definitely take the edge off that u are hearing.

jsmiller58I complained about similar issues with mahogany drop two years ago and some numbnut retaliated with almost a death threat defending these. The major problem I had with these were the muddy mids and less so, non-matching cups. This time it seems to be sibilance in the mids and slight imperfection. I highly doubt Fostex would address at least in their eyes something minor like that for a pair of successfully crowdfunding headphones like the TH-X00. In my experience though, the mids seem to smooth out over time as you use/burn them in, so it ended up not being a major issue, but still not a great experience dealing with fanatics who were blindly offended by legitimate critique.

Nickslife89These are going to be good for me - after quite a few days of burnin they are starting to mellow quite a bit.
Now if only my new DT1990 cans will also mellow out after burn I will be thrilled!
