does anyone know if this thing is waterproof or at least rain resistance? I'm not too sure if I need to line this pack...

HuaLIt uses high-tenacity nylon with NeverWet liquid repelling treatment and DWR treated zippers so the pack is water resistant, not waterproof. There aren't really any ultralight packs that are fully waterproof.

HuaLIt is highly water resistant, on YouTube outer limitless crown 2 60 . About minute 4:15-5:00 he does a water test on this pack . high tenacity Robic nylon is awesome , same stuff ULA backpacks are made from . Save more than half the $ on this set-up . Hope this helped.

HuaLI have the smaller GG version but the MD is using the same fabric and construction. Line your pack and/or be sure to have your critical gear in waterproof bags. This is smart even with a "waterproof" pack anyway. This pack is no different than others in that water will come in the seams/back panel sooner or later. I had mine in a half day of light to medium rain showers and several storms on a recent trip and water got in, as expected. The fabric hardly absorbs any water, which is nice, and even the foam back panel remained nearly dry (that may change with long term use if the mesh abrades the surface of the foam a little). I didn't notice any water that worked through the fabric itself but that'll happen someday as the PU coating wears or degrades from hydrolysis. A pack cover will rarely totally protect contents because of the weak points in construction, so liners are usually best.

Stepbystepahh ok. Thanks! I used to both line the pack and have a rain cover with me due to external pockets but I'm just gonna line it then.

HuaLThe material might be water resistant, but I don't think this pack is built with that in mind. The hole for the hydration tubes at the top of the backpack allows rain to get in easily. I wouldn't put vulnerable stuff like down jackets or sleeping bags inside without waterproofing them first.

Username931235324Not true at all. Zpacks packs are seam sealed and functionally waterproof for hiking.

JoomyThis is a Granite Gear pack, not a ZPacks cuben fiber pack. I don't know how this is "not true at all" as I'm just going by Granite Gear's site's info. I'm not going to tell OP they're waterproof when Granite Gear explicitly says water resistant. ..

Username931235324You said "there aren't really any ultralight packs that are fully waterproof", which is not true...

JoomyI'd say it is true, but perhaps the definition of "fully" or "waterproof" is different to some? You won't find Zpacks or any other pack maker claiming their usual packs are waterproof...just the typical ones that are like roll top dry bags on a suspension. Two issues here (addressing only the Zpacks packs but it really applies to all others) are the seepage that will work in various point, and Time. Use the pack for awhile and you will see stitch hole elongation and some lifting or failure of the tape...the more time water is in contact the the tape the sooner it will give up. Even makers like MLD who are the hands down most skilled cuben craftsmen and really know how to do seams correctly with applied pressure and the correct combination of joining techniques readily state that their packs are not waterproof. All this means is that "functionally" waterproof still doesn't alleviate the need for a liner/dry sack/cover/whatever to keep your critical gear dry. If you hike in temperate conditions where water ingress isn't critical to your safety and is just a nuisance/comfort issue then I suppose it doesn't matter much. This is silly to argue about.
