Received this 2 weeks ago and looks awesome. A question on the foam in the shoulder straps. Is it meant to be sewn to the back panel along with the strap itself? Mine is not and appears unusual compared to other backpacks I have owned.

OodyMy non-MD Crown2 is the same...normal. Funny but I've never really paid attention to this part of construction. I just looked at five packs I have from four manufacturers and each is a little different than the rest for how/where the foam ends and is or isn't stitched, depending on type of strap/harness setup and the materials. The Lutsen is a little different but a Mystery Ranch daypack is more or less the same as the Crown2 here. It may just be simpler to make it this way or it may have some purpose like allowing for expansion under compression and tension while it's in use...seems to add a little flexibility, too. Now I'm going to start looking at every pack I see.....

StepbystepHi, Got my pack today and noticed same thing immediately. Just wonder how such a fixation can take 35lb (15kg) load? It's just the fabric sewn through to the back of the backpack. Will it last a three week through hike with max load under severe weather conditions?

gd52057Well, you're never ever going to have all 35 pounds weighing on the straps except when picking it up I guess...fabric and construction isn't wimpy here, and I'm assuming they use good standard thread choices, so no worries from me about longevity. So far the pack fabric seems pretty decent as well, but of course it's not cordura or dyneema-x fabric. Weather has nothing to do with it...unless you're on a different planet with temps out of our norm....? :) I've used and abused a lot of packs over the years including a couple GG models and I don't have any qualms about these myself...only have about 2-1/2 weeks' worth of use on mine so I guess time will tell but I'm not seeing any indications of worry with it. Could not say the same for a few packs in my past.

StepbystepOK, thank for the insight! I guess I'll have to test it myself before my thru hike. Have plenty of time for that.
