GUYS, you have a ton of us that want to want to buy these headphones, but we've all been burned before and don't want to buy into the hype and end up with junk that is worse than the original. Give us something to work with. Review dates, golden ear guarantee, whatever it takes. Give us a reason to trust you and you'll see WAY more than 125 units sell. Edit: "burned" meaning everywhere, not just Massdrop! I've been scammed and burned on crowdfunding projects and marketing hype all over the place. I didn't mean for this to sound like it was just a Massdrop problem.

rpm604Yeah, not dropping $600 on a pair of cans I can't return, doubly so when there are no review units in the wild. We have nothing to g on but promises, and normalized graphs that only compare to previous revisions. I'd love to see these measured along side other Massdrop products like the TR-X00, and Focal Elex at a minimum, even the HD 6xx, but you're giving us nothing to go by, no comparisons to other models.

rpm604Which Massdrop headphones led to people being "burned"?

KethThe TR-X00, Elex, and 6XX were also "promises". They turned out great!

MegazineNot really, they were just minor updates if updates at all to existing products. The 6XX for example is identical the HD650. These are unlike any other Hifiman product, they have some similarities, but I cant help but think Hifiman made some changes to see these headphones for their cost that might impact actual listening experience.

TheRequiemI still don't understand the argument in terms of credibility and track record. So far all Massdrop headphone collaborations have been respected, why is this one so different? The Fostex TR-X00 was a new iteration influenced by Fostex and performs exceptionally well. The Massdrop Elex also had "similarities" and they perform amazing next to the Elear. Heres some reference: Focal made some changes to meet the Elex cost, but it didn't impact the "actual listing experience".

MegazineHifiman is a very different company than the rest of the headphone companies. There is a reason why the Anandas and X2’s cost almost twice as much. It’s most likely the quality of the components and magnets they use. My guess is they are using the new planar driver, but with older compononents and magnet structures. This is likely another parts dump. All of hifinans new products, the Arya, Anandas, etc... have a new manufacturing process for their magnets and drivers. I trust Dr. Fang would not undercut his new products by making a product that sounds the same. This will be an inferior product worth it’s price. If you know Hifiman and Dr Fangs history.... you’d understand. I’ll wait for reviews.

TheRequiem"This is likely another parts dump". Why doesn't your argument hold true with the 4XX vs 400i? 4XX is cheaper with improved hardware, like the headband at a lower price. "This will be an inferior product worth it's price" Again, the Elex isn't an inferior product vs the Elear which it attempts to replicate. It's cool if you wish to wait for reviews, but your public assumptions may dissuade others from making their own intelligent decision. Someone sounds like a hater... j/k

MegazineWell, I just bought a pair of $1600 Hifiman Arya’s lol, so I’m not a hater. The 6XX and 4XX and Elex’s were and are old designs. Hifiman now sells the Sundaras instead of 400i’s, Sennheiser has now moved on to the 660s and Focal released the Clear, all newer superior improvements of old product lines and used old parts for massdrop launches. Put it together, why are they so much cheaper on Massdrop? Their previous designs that have been replaced by newer hardware. Doesn’t mean any of these products or this Hifiman Edition XX is bad, I am simply saying they are worth their price and have since been replaced by newer models from their respective companies. Same thing with the Ether CX’s, an old model with different pads, slight improvements etc, but now they’ve got the Ether C Flows, which is a newer model. I guess saying it’s a parts dump is a brash way of putting it, but quite simply these are repurposed old designs.

MegazineNow I’d say there are a few products that are massdrop exclusives that are pretty original and good stuff. Their Alex Cavalie and THX certified amps and dacs are pretty sound... so are the 58X’s from Sennheiser... there’s others that are more original and solid. I just know Hifiman and I know these won’t sound as good their $1000+ stuff. In fact, they even said so in an e-mail to another member somewhere below this thread.

TheRequiemIt's true that HIFIMAN down played the Edition XX, but what you're asking for, and seem to be complaining about, is pointless. You raised the issue that what we would be getting from the Edition XX, are passed down older tech [repurposed old designs] from HIFIMAN; therefore the price is fair. Why is this even an argument? I'm not trying to argue with you, and I respect your opinion, but why would HIFIMAN use the latest tech, and put it into the Edition XX in the first place... This is what a Massdrop-collaborations is: making replicas or similar type headphones from a reference, but at a lower development cost, by cutting down costs from hardware, packaging etc.. Your central argument isn't about the Edition XX, but instead it's about the Massdrop-Collaboration concept as a whole. Your only criticizing the Massdrop concept, which is fine, but I have to say, it's pretty irrelevant.

MegazineIt’s not an argument, I was simply advising of the facts and you basically just said everything I have been saying all along. Hence, why these units are worth their price. The only issue is they are comparing these the Edition X’s and X2’s and I don’t think they’ll be quite as good. We shall see.

TheRequiemI was paraphrasing you. With time we will learn more. I feel what we will eventually see, isn’t so much if the XX will be inferior or superior to the Ananda, X or X V2. I think we will get a different, but similar sound, and it will just fall under preference.

rpm604Hey rpm604, Valid request to have some more information and impressions to go on. Thanks for your interest and questions about this Collaboration. We have gotten in some Edition XX review samples and I was just at CES and bumped into someone that I am going to send a pair to. We'll work this week to mix things up and get a few pairs into the wild to different folks ASAP. (Side note: We are working on getting the samples earlier in the process for our launches in 2019 and ensuring there is more for you to go on.) Thanks, Megazine for the examples of collaborations that you recounted and for your support. Thanks to everyone in this discussion: you care enough to comment and participate here- the feedback and sentiment are noticed and go into our thoughts to improve what we are doing and head in the right direction towards better products and a better experience for you. I'm really excited about the things we are working on this year (different things that fall into other categories or price points or tech) and we are absolutely committed to the great things that we launched in 2018. We are working hard to ramp up the production and make these headphones available to more people in 2019.
