This thread and product both are examples of how false marketing work and then wrong anonymous feedback start the hype train. It's another Head-fi style train wreck actually.
Those asking for better headphones at $100...closed M40x and HD598SE/CS both drop below that price often. Another consideration, Soundmagic HP150.

indi_guyFor under $100 the M40x is pretty difficult to beat. Here is my pair with the ZMF angled cowhide pads. They sound fantastic and have all day comfort. :-)

indi_guyI just bought the 598cs 3 weeks ago. They're great headphones, but for my tastes, vocals are a bit on the low side. They're super comfy, pretty loose headband which some may despise and some may love. I bought the 350s on the first drop, and they're still running like a champ besides hinges getting a bit loose. Quality wise, the 598cs feels only slightly better on build quality. Soundwise both are great, but the mids on the 350s are much more elevated than the 598cs. 598cs also has that closed can sub bass (not as much as the m50x, but it's a nice amount.) which my 350s have none of. The he-350 has pretty good mid bass though, a lot better than the 598cs With that said, I only take the 598cs when I study or do work outside of home, home use has been 80% hifimans, and 20% my audeze. My friend who also ordered a pair during the hype train back then, tried mine on with the HM5 pleathers, and we can both agree, regardless if you get the velour or pleathers or hybrids, they're a 300% upgrade in comfort. It was totally worth it. Most comfy headphones I've ever worn. Haven't tried the the m40x, but as of right now, it's pretty hype.

meowmixmeowWith you using your HE-350's more than your Audeze, that's definitely saying something good about the HIFIMAN cans. I really want to try them and have wanted to for a while. I have a set of the HM5 hybrid and velour pads so I think I'll go ahead and grab a set of the HE-350's and give them a good test. It'll be nice to have an easy to drive set of open cans I can use with my phones. I'm waiting on my replacement set of Monoprice Monolith M1060's that will arrive in the next few weeks. They're out of stock until mid April.

meowmixmeowTry 598SE/598 they were best open backs cans in the category and even above. I absolutely loved 598SE then I bought Hd6XX but still if sennheiser releases a phone with 598 sound signature with HD650 bass I will sell my HD650. 598SE has very good soundstage and airy top, in comparison to HD650, the mids are little thin. You can also look at HD558, many people prefer it over 598. HD558 is even cheaper. Even comfortwise, 598/558 beat any phone I have had ever. I haven't heard the new breed of Sennheisers...Hd599/579 etc...they might be hidden gems.

TaaDow What went wrong with your first set of monoliths? Was looking into those a few months ago, Totally didn't realize they were already out. If you feel like doing mods to your hifimans, let me know. I've done quite a bit of them except the filter. When you first put on the Hm5s to the ring on your hifimans, it's going to be tough, and the shape of the ring will be a tad bit out of shape. After a week or so, the ring should have been stretching the ear pads a bit, making it more flush with the ear cup.

indi_guyMy brother got into that 6xx drop (albeit, was refreshing the page 5 minutes prior, and once more at 3 minutes before the drop, and that's when the website went haywire and I couldn't get one myself.) The 6xx sounded great through his deckard amp/dac. Was planning to pick that up instead of of the SEs, but I can only wait so long before I just end up buying the 650 =/. The 6xx box and enclosure thing was pretty nice for a massdrop exclusive compared to the 350s and 7xx boxes.

meowmixmeowI tried the 598se, I wasn't really a fan. Might have been the amp I was using to test it, but it just didn't do it for me like the 6xx . The comfort is super superb though, the headband clamp is a lot looser than the 6xx which is what led me to get some closed 598s for the outdoors.

meowmixmeowThe wood has split in a couple places where the frame screws into the cups. It has happened to several other users as well. These cans sound amazing for the low price. They have a 5-year replacement warranty so they are definitely staying in my collection.

meowmixmeowSennheisers never had wow effect (atleast for me). The clamping goes away after a week or so of usage on Hd6xx. And I think the HD6XX drop was maybe a one time thing or maybe once an year ritual.

meowmixmeowThe M1060 Monoliths have some QC issues. A lot of them have wood cracking at the hinges, as well as issues with the MMCX connectors. M560's build quality wise are flawless, but the sound doesn't compare.

meowmixmeowDo you have a link to where I can buy that little table your monitor, keyboard and mouse are on? It looks like the perfect solution for my desk troubles.

the magni 2 has more than enough to power the hd650. The 6xx should sounds great on a Magni 2, and if you were to ever upgrade your amp to a higher end one, the 6xx supposedly gets even better.

TaaDowThose are cowhide pads? Thought they were pleather since the texture looks so smooth.

KITTYYep. They are the cowhide pads. I had to wait a few weeks for them to come back in stock after I placed my order. I also have a pair of them on my M50xMG.

TaaDowI know that by having these pads, it's not going going to make the m50x's sound better since the drivers are angled, but I am quite tempted to purchase a used m50x with these pads just for fun after seeing your photo. I sold my m50xBL cause I wasn't a big fan of the m50x sound. I'll let you know once I get my own pair of m50x with these pads. Were they hard to put them on? I used Brainwavz pads in the past with my m50x.

KITTYIt's very easy to install the ZMF cowhide pads on the M50x. I've also had MrSpeakers Alpha Pads on them and they're also very easy to install. You shouldn't have too much trouble.

enough power yes. Resolution wise, the Magni Modi stack is still a budget product. HD650 will scale up nicely up to entry high end amp (>$500).
Another way to know is if you hear a big difference in resolution between He350 and HD650. If the difference is small, then clearly the Schiit stack is holding back the HD650 in detail retrieval.
If you want an upgrade in sound, i recommend upgrading the headphone to something like a Beyer Amiron or Audioquest Nightowls. They have a bit more resolution than HD650 and much better soundstage and bass. If you really love the HD650 and want just more resolution, then upgrade your source to something like a Chord Mojo.
