Nice drop, I am tempted to get these but adding a little more I can get the Fostex T50RP with a rebate. I already own SHP-9500.

6EQUJ5The Fostex T50p are also intriguing with the current rebate, but based on my listening preferences, the reviews make me think I should save up for a nicer pair of planars.

JacobHI got the HD598, X2, T50RP MK III after I hear the fostex T50RP MK III I cannot go back to those not planar headphone. Then I bought HE400S but still think T50PR MK III still better.

EricTExactly what I think as well, I think the T50RP MK3 are the best planar headphones under $500. Those headphones are so underrated. I got mine and will cost only $90 after rebate. People keep telling me they need to be modded to sound good blah blah blah..... but they were talking about the MK1s and MK2s and haven't even tried the MK3s. The MK3s need no modification to sound as good if not better than the HE-400i/s because Fostex has done that for you at the factory. All you really need, if you want, is a new set of Shure Alcantara pads to make them more comfortable.

BartolomeoMK3s is semi open can and when you hear the bass it has all the favour of the planar headphone even I got the HE400s open can I still do not get those bass. I already change to HM Hybrid Memory Foam Earpad and the bass is better then the stock earpad. And I know the best is Shure Alcantara pad but cannot buy it anywhere. For MK3 do not need to mod fostex already do it for you.

EricTYou can get the T40rp mk3's which are closed back. They are essentially the same headphones as the t50rp mk3's (same driver and everything), but they are closed back. They have have a little more low end grunt, but they are still light in that area for most listeners likings.

EricTAre you looking/sticking with the Shure Alcantara pads because of Zeos' review? They're on backorder everywhere. I have the MK3 with hm5 pads and zmf cowhide and the zmf win by far.

PaulehWhen look for the Fostex mk3 series I finally make a choice of the T50rp because I want to have better sound stage and not too much sound leak compare to open can.

mastershakeI got it for $140 on BHPhotoVideo, but they raised the price to $159 now. Amazon also had it for $130s last month. Apparently MusiciansFriend had it for $118 a few weeks ago, I missed out on that deal. Seems to be ~$160 everywhere now :(

BartolomeoI bought a pair of the T50RP-MK3's since Z's review on youtube sold me (he IS a salesman...). They are awful. Sure, they are insanely clear. They're also insanely SHRILL, and have ZERO bass whatsoever. I'm a bit upset since I bought not only the phones (which I can return) but also both pairs of pads he suggested (including what seemed to be the 2nd to last pair of 1540 pads in existence for $80) and the cable. I hate them. Tried eq, but no help whatsoever.
Can't believe he said their bass "destroys" the HD598s. 598s sound like bass cannons compared to the t50rp mk3...
DragaanBHPhotoVideo has the closed versions of the Fostex, the T40RP mk3... and it's in stock now for a reduced price.

DragaanI bought them too based on his review. It's a completely different sound compared to my 598s. It's hard to describe, but it's accurate and precise. I didn't even notice the bass was lacking. My pads I upgraded to the ZMF cowhide and the comfort is amazing. It was the same sound as the stock. I kept the cable the same. I hate it, but I don't see myself spending anymore on them. Basswise it's a more responsive lower end. It's quicker. What amp are you using?
If you really want bass, pick up the HA SZ2000. I saw the bass tests on headfi and YouTube and I smiled once I tried them out on flat eqs. It's not as detailed soundstage wise as the X2s I have, and they eat a little into the mids, but the bass thumps and slams without pushing it.
I'd want to say look into the he400is or THx00. I jumped into the THx00 purps just for the bass and detail

BartolomeoI have all sorts of planars in all kinds of price classes but for me the king of the below $500 bracket is still the original HE-400. I understand it's discontinued but if you're looking for something with bass look no further. Also, I really don't think the roomines and spatial placing of a semi-open headphone comes near a completely open headphone
