Yepixnot a good set of cans to compare. ATH m50x has poor separation, poor soundstage, and average soundquality with a bit of muddy bass bloom. You won't find anyone serious about audio recommending you the ath m50x's. They sound incoherent and dull. These will sound better and that is a promise. But they are also open air and hifiman cans are very open. you're gonna be able to hear everything around you including your pc fans running ;-). I think open cans sound nice because soundstage and separation of instrumentals is very beautiful. For home use these would be alright and a better contender than the m50x. But if you're willing to shell out the money for the m50x which is more expensive I'd recommend dropping in on the next massdrop ft. akg k7xx drop. k7xx is 200 dollars and a VERY good pair of mid-fi cans at an entry-level price. comfort between the 2 is the same, the m50xs are the least comfortable of the three (shallow earcups, anyone and everyone's ears will touch the driver and earpad swapping makes the sound worse because your ear has to be close to the driver or everything in the sound just falls apart.

UzuzuHaha yeah the m50xs aren't the best pair out there but that was pretty brutal xD Totally right though, these are an absolute steal comparatively :P

addieyeThe m50x are simply over recommended and often improperly used. They are a niche headphone, not a standard. The only people I see benefiting from the M50x are youtubers who do a lot of voiceovers(which is where a lot of the over recommendation comes from). They aren't particularly good for recording artists as they lack detail. A mostly flat response for their price is essentially their only positive in comparison to headphones that are +- $40 of the M50x like the DT770, Custom One Pros, HD598s, potentially these HE-350s, etc. when on sale. If you actually want to enjoy listening to your music or any other media, it's probably not a good idea to get the M50x. Some might like them, but most of who I know who recommend and use them are simply doing so because they don't realize just how many good headphones there really are or can't see beyond their usage scenario. If you want a decent Audio Technica closed headphone, the lowest I'd go would be the MSR7 (I had it for a little while before selling it for the MDR-1ABT to get LDAC support and increased comfort).

JJamesonHm I have to agree with you there. I was tossing up between the M50x and the Custom One Pros for a bit but I quickly decided to go with Beyerdynamic on that one because they were just a bit more fun.
