Mine arrived today. Tried a bunch of familiar tracks with it on my portable player+amp.
I agree with previous first impressions posted here, the high frequency is harsh. It even breaks (chalkboard scraping) under certain tone which is torturous to my ears.
Bass is less pronounced than expected. Do not get me wrong, I am NOT a bass head and almost hate the loud low-freq sound. However I am expecting a well defined bass from a pair that bears the hifiman brand name but it is simply not here.
Right out of box it is not as good as SHP-9500, I am hoping the listening experience improves after " burn in" period. It is just that all my other dynamic or magnetic planner open headphones perform mostly fine right out of their boxes so for first impression this pair failed.
If this is the pair that HiFiman puts out to lure potential buyers to climb up their product chain then it has failed in my opinion.
I have seen user recommend using EQ to balance out the high treble and other short comings user experienced with this model.
However my point is with the HiFiman brand name I am expecting a pair with acceptable sound quality and relatively balanced out put throughout the frequency range just like other popular pairs such as the sennheiser 600 or Philips shp9500.
Why would I want to spend time using EQ to adjust this pair when other brand products perform just fine with no need for EQ adjusting under most listening scenarios?
In addition I think over 5000 orders of this round are all "LAB Rats" for HiFiman's 19 ohm version of speaker drivers.
