It is so interesting to see that there are so many diverse comments on this can. I can only put it down to the personal taste. You want something refined, or something analytical? HE350, to me, is very analytical.
I used my HD650 and HE350 with Chord Mojo, listening to some pop/rock/jazz last night. I can't speak for others but, Yes, HD650 is more refined to my taste, but I still think HE350 (with bass mod of my portable amp, stock pads and stockcable) was a fun for listening to vocal, bar the high in some selected songs with emphasized "s" sound.
I also have Senn's HD439, which I usually use it for casual listening to youtube videos but it is great with rock and metal music. The listed price is $100 in Amazon (at the same price point with HE350 but I bought it at around $80 two years ago in a local shop) and it is also an open-back can. Subjectively I think HE350 is more detailed, more airy; while the HD439 is smoother. After the "bass mod", I think the bass of the HE350 is more present and crisp than that of HD439. To me I enjoy HE350 more, in terms of both the sound and look.

cheapladWhat portable amp are you using? I also have the mojo and I'm wondering if the mojo would improve the sound, that is, maybe tame the highs and boost the bass.

xenjI plug my HE350 (19ohm with bass mod) to Mojo, and this is my impression:
Boost the Bass? > Low bass / Mid bass Songs (all lossless): Queen - The Millionaire Waltz / Dragon Attack Marvin Gaye - What's Going On / Mercy Mercy Me (Ecology) Black Sabbath - Bassically/N.I.B. Pink Floyd - Time / Money Iron Maiden - 22 Acacia Avenue Kraftwerk - The Robots Pet Shop Boys - West End Girl Charles Mingus - Mood Indigo (the version from Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus) Leonard Cohen - Dance Me to the End of Love (Live)
I think HE350 plays the mid bass beautifully. In the bass solo of Mood Indigo, or in 22 Acacia Avenue, I feel that HE350 demonstrates presence and good control. What I really like is the mid-bassy voice of Leonard Cohen (around 120hz to 350hz) - It just like he is singing next to you.
In What's Going On, The Millionaire Waltz, Dragon Attack, the sub-bass is still quite present even Marvin and Freddie sing.
Tame the High? > Low to High Treble Songs (all lossless):
Norah Jones - Don't Know Why Florence + the Machine - Only If for Night / Shake it Out / Ship to Wreck Jacky Cheung(張學友) - 藍雨 / 別戀 Dusty Springfield - The Look of Love / How Can I be Sure
I use Florence's songs to test the high treble. Ok it is tolerable and but I think I may not be able to sit thru her album Ceremonials with HE350 because she sings the songs like she roars. The chorus of Jacky's songs reach 14khz+ it somehow hurts my ears a bit. The problem comes when I listen to Dusty Springfield. The high treble really reaches an intolerable level.
Verdict (very personal and amateurish of course): The combo of Chord Mojo and HE350 help give me the fun and demonstrate good and controlled sub-bass and mid-bass.
I encounter some problems with the high treble in HE350. The problem has been abating since the unboxing two weeks ago but it still provides some piercing attack when the singers sing "s" sound, rending it not listenable.

cheapladThank you for the very detailed response. So the highs can really be that piercing eh? Even with the toilet paper mod? And which bass mod did you do? :) Again, thank you!

xenjLet me put it this way: the high of HE350 is more tame than the time when it was fresh out of box. And I think I am OK with the high in my pop / jazz now. However, in some songs with extensive high treble (12khz or higher) I do experience some piercing sound.
I test both the "towel mod" (four layers) and EQ tuning (decrease around 10dB for 10khz or higher range). and the piercing attack has gone. I think the towel mod works better than the EQ one as the latter makes the sound a bit more muffled.
The "bass mod" I apply = https://www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-x-hifiman-he-350/talk/530648

cheapladYup. From what I've read from the other comments as well, burning it in helps in lessening the harshness of the highs. I have a Grado sr325e and Beyerdynamic DT990 premium, which can be peaky on the treble for some people. I have no problems with these 2, so I think I can work with the HE350.
Good thing that bass mod looks easy to do. I'm not really good at tinkering with gears.
Anyway, thank you for all your help. I'll think this through. :)
