I already own the HD650, X2 and M1060. I was wondering if the HE4XX is worth getting since I have an M1060 or should I save my money for the HD700 or maybe even an HD800 given that they both are upgrades from HD650?

SeijuroThis is probably besides the point and potentially not what you want to hear but taking the 700s and even the 800s as given upgrades from the 650s is not the right approach. I own 650s and 800s and I prefer the former for almost every genre of music; only reason I keep the 800 around is to look for minute differences when I change something else within my audio chain (DAC, amp, cables, whatever else). They're a microscope.
The 650s are not that at all, neither are the X2s nor any of the Hifiman 400/500 line. I've never tried the M1060s as they don't interest me very much so I can't comment on those.
PS: Stay away from the 700s. If you want that "type" of headphones then save up for the 800 and be glad you did.

SeijuroThese should be more neutral, though less "planar sounding", than the M1060s if that makes sense to you. It looks like they are going with the modern HE400 line tech but using the classic hifiman look with the headband and details on the sides.
Hopefully Massdrop puts these into a reviewer's hands somewhere before the drop is over.

SeijuroHE4xx might not be as good or sound like M1060, but I am sure they probably sound good for that low price. M1060 may be better, but probably not $130+ better.
So if you want better and not necessarily cheaper, might be better to save your money unless your going for a collection then you might as well add these and even akg 7xx lol.
Out of your collection, what do you like best in terms of comfort and sound wise? I am going for my own collection to find out lol.

SeijuroM1060 doesn't sound quite right to many, they have this strange ringing that makes music metallic and harsh and the 5k peak is really bothersome, so I eventually sold it for a pair of HE400. The HEs are simply better without any noticeable peak. The planar bass is still there, albeit less extended.
If 4XX shares the same driver as the original 400 then its definitely worth a shot.

Z0d1AcI'm actually expecting my K7XX to arrive tomorrow, my first AKG headphone.
Comfort-wise, all are good, but the X2 edges out the 650 and M1060. The X2s have no pressure points and the only flaw is the opening to the ear pads could have been slightly larger and deeper. The 650s feel great but they do have a little clamping pressure (not unbearable) that subsides the longer I wear them. M1060s feel fine but they are flimsy as hell and the leather can get quite sweaty if I don't have my quiet fan on near me.
Sound-wise, when I want to relax with a warm, more lush sound signiture and listen to something without a lot of punch the 650s are my go-to but if I want to hear punchier music (ex. RATM and Tool) and don't mind a slightly "metallic" sound signature the M1060s. The X2s are fun to listen to, handle punchy stuff well without the metallic 1060 sound, but are a little bass heavy and have are ever so slightly less detailed than the other two. Overall, the 650s are my favorites because they do just about everything well and there is never a time where my ears don't feel like listening to them.

LambdastormThe metallic sound of the M1060 bothers me sometimes too, but I figured that was just how planars sound. I think you convinced me to get the 4XX. Thanks!

SeijuroI have the he400i and the m1060 the only way your gona beat the m1060 is if you go over the 1k mark for your next headphones. So no dont buy these. Secondly do you like the m1060 sound signature? If so i wouldnt really recomend going from them to the hd700 or 800 you should probably stick with planar and go with either audeze or mr speaker headphones.

SeijuroWhy even go to the HD 700 if you got the HD 650.Your next step would be 800 but with the mod to decrease the brightness.

SeijuroThank you for the reply.
Let us know what you think about the K7XX. I am more interested in these HE 4XX then those, but prove me wrong.
What do you mean as metallic? Like tin can or dull/cold sounding?
I saw a review, but can't find the link now, but he says the HE4XX sound relaxed like the HE560, just have much better highs and a modified sound signature to the HE400i, not a whole lot of bass I heard tho. So basically planar HD 6xx?
So bass wise I think M1060 will be better and have more punch and maybe even more detail, not sure about that metalic thing your talking about. Probably will not bother me when I get a pair.
