Hello, I just joined, primarily for the audiophile products. Looking at purchasing the NHT C3 speakers for our new living room. Space is about 15 feet wide by 33 long and they will fire long ways. Space is just for general listening, music room with all equipment is downstairs, so hoping they will fill it with sound nicely. Cheers.

I disagree with the way you worded your post though. I think $160 planars can sound perfectly fine - if these actually stand up to their 400S (one of the best price:performance ratio headphones you can currently buy, imo) for a fraction of the price it will be like stealing candy from a little child.
Here's the thing - the 650s scale indefinitely. They're a great purchase for anyone who's already got an established audio chain and who rotates between a couple headphones as is. The 400S are amazing all-rounders, especially for someone who's just gotten into the hobby, which from where I stand seems to be what Massdrop is attempting to achieve here with the 4XX. They're easy to drive, they scale fairly well, they are relatively comfortable and play well with most genres of music.
Ok, you buy them, then, you can tell me how great these HiFiman's are.
As of right now, no one has a clue about them and what corners the Chinese will cut to reach a 169.00 price point. Oh, Fang is in NY? Try headquarters are in Tianjin, China Start with shit....wind up with .... I always say
I'll elaborate, you seem to have a problem with where these will be made and again, the way you worded things makes it sound like you don't like Chinese products - long gone are the days where that instantly meant corners are being cut or that quality is nowhere to be seen, get with the times. I will get them and I'm almost 100% sure you'll be proven wrong. Matter of fact, you sort of already have been proven wrong, just not directly and not in this discussion board. Here,
Credit for the comparisons to a member of SBAF that goes by Hands - the remainder of the thread is here in case you want to look at proper measurements and distortion etc graphs for the 4XX (first post by Marv) - http://superbestaudiofriends.org/index.php?threads/massdrop-x-hifiman-he4xx-measurements-and-impressions.4815/
You can dislike Hifiman's headphones or their dealings all you want but fact of the matter is the 400 line (especially the 400S) is highly regarded by people who are not only qualified but also have the best audio measurement/testing systems and labs money can buy (see Tyll's review of the 400S at Innerfidelity for example); https://www.innerfidelity.com/content/terrific-hifiman-he400s-planar-magnetic-headphones
I don't like the 400i either, and the 560s are definitely not for me for a bunch of different reasons but I still recognise them as good headphones - you cannot argue that they are bad, they are objectively good, especially the 400S. I'm speaking of sound exclusively, the build on my 400S was spotty at best and they creaked every now and then etc but I trust Massdrop have already figured build quality out with HFM.
Not knowing what the driver is is irksome I agree but by now there is plenty of evidence that goes for showing the potential the 4XX have. Comments like yours are why people are more serious audio related forums/boards don't take anything said over here seriously; "lol made in China" is such a ridiculous attempt at a proper argument.
Dont get me wrong, there are good "value" headphones out there.
So, for my last purchase, I saved and I bought a $600.00 headphone. Most call it a "mid-fi" buy, although, to me, it was a substantial headphone purchase. I still have the cans, listen to them every night and they continue to impress! The cans? Beyerdynamic DT1990 Pro. They're fucking great and the best thing about them? I DONT regret the purchase.
BTW- the best $50.00 headphone in the world? Status Audio CB-1. Can’t be beat for the price. Period!
ignorant comment.
