I have the HE400s, and while they sound pretty good, they are definitely lacking in the bass department.

GrumpyCamperLeather/hybrid pads help a lot - I didn't like the bass of the 400S before I swapped them out, my best results have come from using full sheepskin leather pads from Kennerton but you don't really want to be spending $100 on pads for $250 headphones probably. The $30~ hybrids from Brainwavz worked almost as well though and were more breathable and less warm on the ears after extended use, the Focus Pads from HFM are basically the same exact design (and more expensive) so I'm sure this'll bring up the bass on the 4XX too (which from people's measurements seem to have better bass than focus pads 400S/stock 400i).

GrumpyCamperBig difference in the bass department between the 400S and the 400i from what I read. Since we don't really know what the driver is, it's hard to say. However, I have heard swapping pads helps (like Vigrith said). Fortunately I believe the 4xx seems to come with the pads you want for that. Between that and the impedance, I really feel like these are going to sound like the 400i's... Though the price suggests the 400S. At any rate, I absolutely love the 400i's for bass. It's not rock your skull thumping bass, but it's sooooooooo sexy. Fast too. It's very very good. The 400S may be warmer as I've seen some people note...I honestly can't tell you...But I can say that I use a tube amp with the 400i's and I don't feel like I'm missing a thing. It could very well be that the tube amp brings back that warmth and plays nicely with the more analytical nature of the 400i's. Essentially I think you have options here if you're not thrilled with the sound signature. However, if you are looking for basshead cans, I'm not sure any of the HE400 series are gonna get you there. Probably more than enough threads on head-fi to give you more of an idea.

VigrithThanks, got the https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00VV3MADK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ( HIFIMAN Leather Earpads) and that certainly helped in the bass dept.
