I need some advice: The combination of the relativity cheap price and being a planar headphone (which I have never heard) gets me interested to buy these. Currently, I use AKG K530 LTD which are falling apart after some years of daily usage. I will listen music on spotify mostly with the headphones, gaming not so much. Music: Pop/Rock/RnB, some electronic music. I want to spend around 200€. Which of these headphones is similar in sound to the AKG I have (a little more extended bass would be nice and more clarity). Here a link to the frequency response of the K530 http://reference-audio-analyzer.pro/en/report/hp/akg-k-530.php AKG 712 Pro --> 230€ http://reference-audio-analyzer.pro/en/report/hp/akg-k-712.php Beyerdynamic DT880 --> 180€ http://reference-audio-analyzer.pro/en/report/hp/beyerdynamic-dt-880-pro.php Hifiman HE4xx --> after adding import VAT probably 190-200€ Philips Fidelio X2 --> 190€ Sennheiser HD579 --> 190€ (have heard them, they sounded warm and more in my face than my K530s to me) http://reference-audio-analyzer.pro/en/report/hp/sennheiser-hd-579.php

bulleodepends on what you are looking for... X2 is rather overrated imo, dt880 is too bright for my taste, HD579 is lower bracket, HE4xx gives a better value and all around sounding.

bulleoThese should be more laid back and bass heavy than the hd579. X2 will probably have the most bass, but the he4xx should beat all your other options in quality overall. This is a good cheap way to try some planar bass. Flat instead of the usual midbass hump that Dynamics have. Only main difference I can see is it doesn't go below 30hz like some higher end planarmagnetic headphones.

SeT9I just have seen the estimated shipping date. I can't wait till December, I need new headphones sooner. So I wont wait for the Hifimans.

bulleoBuy the HD6XX.
If you want planar then buy the Fostex T-X0.
Don't forget the AKG K7XX. Thats a great choice too.
The three above are without a doubt a better choice than the HE4XX

Mr.BeldingHm, ok. Fostex are too expensive at the moment for my budget. With shipping and VAT the K7XX would cost me 225€. So in that case I would buy the K712 Pros that are equal to them from Amazon.de directly for 233€. Concerning the HD6XX, the drop has ended and also shipping would have been in December.
So this leaves me only with the K712 Pro I guess.

Mr.Beldingeveryone is going to have a different taste.
in my personal opinion, the K7XX was unconfortable and did not sound all that good. I sold it after 2 weeks of owning them.
Absolutely hated every minute of the akg k7xx.

Mr.BeldingI would argue the fostex, even modded the driver can't really compete with the he400 series. They aren't quite as good as the hd6xx, but I think they can beat the k7xx, especially in the midrange.

bulleoI own similar models to all of these other than the X2 (HE-400, HD6XX, DT880, HD518 and K7XX), so here is my take on these:
AKG 7XX - I don't like the build quality (creaky, elastic bands stretched out super quick) or fit (pads hurt my head and don't seal well), but the sound is pretty good. I was surprised at how much easier it is to drive then some of the older models in the family (was mostly good from a phone or tablet).
HE-400 - Sound was great and fun, the comfort stock was bad. Adding focus pads helped a ton (which this buy has) and I also grabbed a ZMF Pilot Pad to make it very comfortable. The HE-4XX is like a frankenstein of the 400 and the 400i/s, so you avoid the crappy old cables, but you don't get the fun sound of the 400.
HD6XX - Somewhat hard to drive properly, but they sound good do nothing wrong other than clamping too hard initially. I was not wow'd by them, but also they are pretty good at all genres.
DT880 (600Ohm) - Hardest to drive, but I love their sound. I also find them the most comfortable. Long fixed cables makes me angry.
Senn HD518 - I modded them to improve the sound and added HD558 pads, but the fact is these are not the same class headphone as the others. I don't find them comfortable, but if they fit your head well they are super light and easy to drive from a phone or tablet.

bulleo(based on your current conclusions) if you have an amp, k712 if you plan to get an amp as well, k712 no amp maybe think about k553 k553 like nearly all headphones would benefit from amp. k553 + okay amp would be in your budget (massdrop version-i think)
i own the k7xx, took a moment to get used to the sound signature. increased sound stage makes things sound odd at times. highs were tad harsh to me (prefer sennheiser veil), but not extreme or anything. EQ tamed the sibilance. I now enjoy them - good buy.

NYalexThat's interesting, as I love mine. However, they have no excitement to them, I just find them neutral and pretty honest and so I use them for making music. My mixes got much better when I started using these.

zod000Thanks for the reply, I am interested why the AKG did hurt you? Did your ear touch the inner part? (that's the problem I have with the worn out pads of the K530, they are to flat, so after 30 minutes my ear starts to touch the driver part and starts hurting).

Michael-QWell, I don't have a dedicated amp yet (only on-board ALC892 or Yamaha RX-V 467 headphone out). I plan to buy a headphone amp, but not immediately at the time when buying these new headphones. (debating between SMSL M3, SMSL SD793ii and Schiit Magni 2)
Since you prefer the Sennheiser sound, would you recommend the new HD579? (I think the HD600 are to neutral for my taste, as well as to expensive. HD600 and HD650 both for ~350€)

KaneDWilliamsWhich ones can you recommend that aren't as neutral as the K7XX?

bulleoI'd hate to recommend things I don't own or know little about. I own HD 558 and HD 650. 558 is ~$80 in US -> pretty good buy in terms of value. It has more bass compared to hd650 but the bass sounds more fuzzy and one sounding. But... I also find hd 650 a little too neutral for my taste (low end).
Oh, and the bass is even worse without an amp on my old pc's. my new pc has much better on board audio option and the 558 sounds about as good as 558 gets. I'm just saying an amp may or may not significantly improve sound for you at that price point, and using an amp was significantly better compared to my old PC on board.
The reason I mentioned the 558 is because the 579 is probably more of a side grade with a brand new sticker - but of course I wouldn't know unless i had it. Guess my recommendation is for you to keep searching until you know you'll be happy without doubts.

Michael-QYou may be right, comparing the frequency response the HD579 isn't as neutral though, it is a bit more fun sounding. Sensitivity is about the same. But " For 94,0 dB SPL need, mW " is a bit lower on the HD579; needs a bit less power. http://reference-audio-analyzer.pro/en/report/hp/sennheiser-hd-558.php http://reference-audio-analyzer.pro/en/report/hp/sennheiser-hd-579.php

awi5951Shipping is too expensive ($113). Then adding 19% VAT, makes these $440 headphones.

bulleoNo, it was that the pads were actually too wide (which is generally the opposite of the normal problems). The rear bottom quadrant of the pads presses against the bone there and causes pain after extended listening. I feel like the newer memory foam pads AKG switched to actually are part of the problem as they are more dense and stiff than velour pads from Sennheiser or Beyerdynamic. I can manage to shift the headphones around to avoid that pain, but they then do not seal or sit well on my head and it affects sound quality. I guess it is one of those things that would be nice to be able to demo for some people. I find Beyers the most comfortable by a wide margin, but that is not true for everyone.

bulleoI'm no headphone expert, and don't know enough about what sort of sound you want to feel confident recommending anything to you. Out of all my headphones, the Sennheiser HD485 is probably the most fun to listen to. They sound well balanced, yet when compared to the 7XX, it's easy to hear they are not as neutral and revealing. My Beyer DT770 Pro's (600ohm) are also quite fun to listen to with lots of low end thump. If you want to try something that sounds very similar to the 7XX but that are dead cheap, the iSK HP580's are great. The pads are crap and make the ears sweat a bit, so replacing those would be a good idea. The overall sound is similar to the 7XX, but the soundstage is narrower and the separation of instruments is not as clean etc, but for the money they are ace. Mine went dodgy though, so build quality is questionable, but they had been taken around quite a bit. The 7XX has also needed soldering twice (different wires) in one of the cans as well though.
