Which set are these based off? Looking at the price im thinking the 400S? And looking at reviews changing the pads to thicker ones can make these run/sound at pace with the big boys. I live the design of these compared to the dull silver of the original HiFi400s

SeT9Wow..that would be an insane deal if so! The originals go almost three times the price of this drop, and not being a fan of the original headband this seems almost to good of a deal, I'm almost more excited about these than the HD6XX Drop... :)

JKDjEdiIt reminds me of the k7xx, the original was too bright, so they bump the whole bass range up a few decibels. I just hate that these will take till Christmas to arrive. The hd6xx is probably still technically better, but I like the planar sound more.

SeT9The 400i is on sale for $210 at Ritz Camera. Reccived mine in two days. It's my second pair. For $40 more than the 4XX you know what you're getting.

professordumasDon't get me wrong the he400i is pretty good, I ended up selling mine because the response was weird. Like, the bass is linear, but steadily drops off, and it sounds warm, but sometimes sharp, because of a treble peak around 8k. I'm excited for the he4xx because it looks like they retuned the 400i to what I actually wanted it to be. The measurements on innerfidelity, and sbaf, show the treble peaks have been toned down and the bass keeps it's power longer before rolling off.

SeT9Cool. Good to know they did that. That's one thing I like about Hifiman--they continually seek to improve the sound signature of their headphones. That, and they're basically leading the industry in producing relatively inexpensive planar magnetic cans that are simply excellent. Hope you enjoy your 4XXs. I'm interested to hear them myself. I don't hear the drop off in bass you describe with the 400i. I've also got Sennheiser HD650, Fostex 6XX purpleheart, AKG K7XX, Oppo PM3, and Beyerdynamic DT800 Pro. The response of the 400i definitely is a little warm. Definitely warmer than the PM3s. But nothing like the 6XXs. Enjoy.

professordumasAgreed, before Hifiman I dont think there were any good affordable planars. Basically take all that description and tone it down a few levels, all of those traits I listed were relatively small, and the headphone overall was great. These are issues that are only 3-5 db of variance, Still... I'm super picky. I ended up with the he560, and the hd6xx, my analytical and warm heaphones. The 560 wins at the extremes, and the hd6xx has that relaxing mid warmth. I have been looking at the pm3 as a portable option, how does it compare to the hd6xx and the he400i? Sub bass? details?

SeT9My two go-to headphones are the HD650 and PM3--except occasionally when I really want to rock out with the Fostex 6XXs . The PM3s are closer to neutral, clean, clear, and remarkably well balanced. Treble: there's a tiny bit of roll-off at the top giving them less airiness and extension compared to, say, the AK7XX and DT880. Some claim it sounds recessed. I thought that at first, but now really love the tuning in the treble. It's very natural sounding and smooth with no sibilance. It's ever so slightly recessed in the lower treble to my ear, but nothing that bothersome in the least. Mids: there's a tiny bump starting at around 2-3K making vocals sound slightly forward--something I prefer since I love vocals. Base: it's not quite neutral, but not very U-shaped either. There's a slight emphasis in the mid-base that gives a full sound without coloring it too much--less so than the HD650. The bass is tight/unbloated, responsive, detailed and full with fairly good extension but no slam. Overall, the sound of the PM3 is simply excellent analogous to the way the HD650 is. The sound is different obviously because of the planar drivers. But like the HD650, the PM3 works well with essentially all genres, does almost everything well and is effortless to listen to for hours on end. It isn't a reference headphone in the same way the HD650 isn't either. But it's close to neutral with the ever so slight emphasis in the mid-base and on vocals making it more fun than a reference signature. I simply love the PM-3. The design is outstanding--handsome, beautiful and extremely comfortable. The pads don't leak much sound according to my wife, who is sensitive to that. In some ways it's like what you described previously with regard to the 4XX--the PM3 is deliberately tuned to be close to neutral and inoffensive. Given your pickiness, I'm betting you'll like it. At 26 Ohms, they're easy to drive. That's one reason I wanted a pair. They do scale ever so slightly with a good amp, but not much. If you decide to get a pair, check the store on the Oppo web site. A friend of mine and I both got ours refurbished from Opposite for $130 off. Both pairs appeared brand new.

professordumasAgree, I own both the HD6xx and PM3, they're quite similar in terms of signature. If you like one, you will like the other.

Sennheiser PC37X randomly goes bad after disconnecting the cable ?

Greetings, Yesterday I was using my headset like normal with my macbook, just listening to music and on a call with people like usual, and the headset was perfectly fine. The stock wire that came with the headset is extremely long and yesterday it annoyed me very much that it kept getting tangled with itself, so I decided to see if the cable is replaceable. I pulled out the cable from the headset and saw the adapter, and looked online for a replacement. Upon plugging it back in, the audio sounded extremely muffled and washed out. Im not sure what I did wrong to make it mess up like that as I've always taken good care of it, ive had it for about 2 years and its always just been chilling on my desk, but anywho I thought the cable just went bad and ordered a replacement. The replacement came, and the issue is still persistant, so I am not sure what the issue is I've tried multiple different headsets and the issue is not with the port, and I also tried it with my windows laptop and...

Recommendation for my next headphone set? I have Koss 95x

Hey all, What would you recommend I get next and why? I have Koss ESP-95x electrostatic massdrop headphones. These are my first and only audiophile set. I love them. I think my only real requirements is $500 or less for the headphones and that they have a little more low end. I don’t need thump but these are really light on lows…but the experience is still awesome. Also any recommendations on an amp? I only have my electrostatic thingy. I am using the Topping D50 DAC. thx!!

Should I exchange the PC38X for better headphones?

I bought the PC38X headphones FOR GAMING and they are great, but I have NO use for a Microphone since I don't do competitive gaming and I was wondering if there were better headphone options at a similar price without a headphone, where (presumably) more of the cost was put into making it sound better.
