Just played them quickly on a Fiio E17K with a ipod classic as source and I'm very impressed. The fit and finished surpassed my expectations, some received them with a small gap on the outer surrounds,my was flushed perfect. There was no sense of "shaking " at all on loud bass and the headband was pretty comfortable but can be a sweat magnet.I can see where the focus pads can add more details for those who want to upgrade. Can't wait to get these into my main system of Hi Res with my Decware Taboo III tube amp. Those people trying to compare these to a pair of headphones that cost 4X as more is really highlighting how good these headphones are.I will use these for a good 50 hours before final conclusion but at the end these only cost $169.99.What is very apparent is the bass is robust and controlled.Mids are really spacious and lush, and the highs does roll off quicker than other headphones I owned. This is only a quick hour audition using some very inexpensive and older portable gear though.I do notice the 3.5mm jack does not lock in to the portable in puts, like those who mentioned its a tad too thin but the it fits snugly into the 1/4 jack adaptor.I like to hear from those who changed the stock cable to something better,I'm going to pick up some balance cable for these headphones. I already put an hour on my Decware which was designed for planar in mind and it was really a huge step up from the basic portable units.Listening to Sonny Rollins,Chet Baker, Patricia Barber ,Eva Cassidy,Miles Davis,Warnes,Pink Floyd,REM,DR Dre and finally Mahler, Stravinsky. The strength is definitely towards vocals, horns and strings.Thats my own impression with my current set up. These are not meant to be HD 800s or LCD X giant killers but fills a nice niche for sub $600 headphones. One thing for sure they are worth way more than $169.99 imho.A cable upgrade is a must to bring these headphones up a level and the pads even though damn comfortable recesses too much.Overall now playing in my main table set up I'm very happy with these headphones, the ratio of cost to quality is off the scale.
I do not understand why people are doing a comparison with the 6XX.Apples to oranges, dynamic vs planar.A better comparison is the older version of the 400i/400s/LCD2 and the 1060.
Update after 35+ hours of burn in:Wonderful headphones.Bass got a bit more weight, soundstage got wider, but highs still rolled off tad too quickly.Rolled some Mullard and Sovtek tubes on the Decware and these headphones like the British tubes, more warmer mids and tad more richness. These are not for boomy bass or hyper detail lovers though but a truly well balance headphones. In fact I like them better than the LCD 2 which I owned years ago and much better than the 400i's which the driver is derived from.Leaving the pads as is since they are so comfortable but changing the cables which is definitely the weak part.Like to thank Massdrop and HifiMan for fabulous drop.
