Received mine yesterday, but just had the chance to sit down and listen to them for a bit.
I've only recently gotten into headphones, so I don't have a huge range of experience, but I'm hearing a lot to like. They seem to have a nice amount of detail, and a nice clear sound. I can hear a difference vs dynamic headphones I've listened to, but hard to explain exactly what the difference is.
As compared to my AKG KXXs these don't have as much bass, and seem to roll off a good bit earlier in the sub bass region.
Compared to Audeze EL-8s I listened to at the Apple Store these seem to lack a bit of 'sparkle' in the treble, and again have less bass and less punch, but the EL-8s are a much more expensive headphone.
Overall they are still very nice though, and feel well built. They're comfortable, though I wish they came with a longer cord. Do planars break in over time?

tutetibiimperesWhat does the box these come in look like? The HE400i box was amazing, I think that part of the reason Hifiman can sell these cheaper is probably because they used a cheaper box.

Z0d1AcOk so it is a cheap box. Being 100% serious I bet you at least $20 if the price diffefence between these and the HE400is is the box. The 400is has one of the nicest boxes I’ve ever seen, with really nice leather.

tutetibiimperesWhat? No bass? Now I regret for joining the drops.
DasKeyThere’s bass, it just doesn’t seem as deep as it does on the K7XX or the EL-8.
A song I use to test is Katy Perry’s Swish Swish. There’s an isolated deep electronic bass line. With the K7XX I can hear every note and it doesn’t diminish in volume as it digs deep. With the HE4XX it seems to drop in volume considerably as it goes down.
Now, it may also be a difference in amp. I’ve been using the K7XX on the headphone jack on my Emotiva PT-100, but the cord on the 4XX is too short to reach from the chair, so I tried that out tonight on the jack on my Elac Element, I’m not sure if that would make a difference, but when my extension cable arrives I’ll try them out on the Emotiva.

tutetibiimperesI will say the difference between clarity and power when it comes to the bass is an important distinction. I agree there is diminishing power/volume in the HE4XX vs the K7XX but I don't think the clarity for the bassline is nearly as precise as on the HE4XX.
I generally choose to EQ planars in the bass for the type of listening I like to do. My EL-8s are the same way. When I pop them into a lightning port with the EQ through the CIPHER DAC the cans feel like they come alive, but when I just go straight 3.5mm into a FIIO X7 I kind of feel meh.
djfluffkinsI figured I'd post an update. My headphone extension cable came in tonight, so I tried them out hooked up to the Emotiva PT-100, and it made a big difference in the bass response. I'm guessing my Elac Element doesn't put out as much power, because the bass was much fuller and had better extension on the PT-100, seems to easily match the K7XX in that regard now.
