Received mine over the weekend and I have mixed feelings. I plugged these directly into my computer, let them play music for 2 days to break-in, then gave a listen. I was stunned at how good they sounded... deep bass, wide soundstage and even good/clear highs. I couldn't wait to plug these into my Mimby/Vali Schiit stack at the office.
I got to the office and am extremely disappointed. The HE4xx actually sounded better plugged directly into my home computer and are dull and congested when paired with the Vali. My HD600's sound much, much, much better on the Vali.
As for comfort, I find the HD600's (and HD6xx that I also have) to be far more comfortable than the HE4xx. I have a fairly large head (filled with air) and find that the HE4xx's tend to drop down and put all of the weight on the headband - becomes annoying with long listening sessions. The Senns are very light on the headband. Yes, clamping force is high out of the box, but easily cured with a little work on the springsteel band... in short, I can wear the Senn all day without discomfort.
So now I'm at a loss... The plan had been to take the HD600's home to my recently completed Bottlehead Crack OTL amp and use the HE4xx at the office on the Vali. I guess I need a new plan :-(

dasmanJust plugged the HE4xx into my Galaxy S7 and even that sounds way better than the HE4xx/Mimby/Schiit Vali (1st Gen) pairing. For whatever reason, the HE4xx and my Schiit stack really don't like each other.
On the Schiit stack, the HE4xx have recessed mids/highs, narrow soundstage and the bass is lacking. I guess I need to find another amp pairing for the office. I wonder if the HE4xx doesn't like all tube amps, or just has a specific dislike for my Vali... I don't have a solid state amp to try at this point...

dasmanI don't even have an amp for mine yet. But compared to the 6xx, k7xx, m1060 they are trying to be neutral, but the he-4xx sound dull/stuffy boring.
I guess the plan would be to read the comments and see what most people are using that seem to make these sound good?

dasmanI unboxed mine about 30 minutes ago. On a Schiit Magni/Modi V1 stack, the HD600 and HD650 are clearly the better overall headphones. I'll give them a bunch of hours on the amp in case there is any break in effect though.
So far, the HE4XX has some impressive qualities, it's definitely speedier in the treble than the 600 even, but it does seem to be lacking in bass and mid-bass compared to the 650 in particular, and it feels a bit closed in with some vocals.
It's also borderline uncomfortable. Very bottom heavy, and the headband feels like it needs more adjustment range to make it *smaller* - this coming from someone who has his HD600 adjusters out halfway.

spronkAfter further listening throughout the day, I've increased my opinion of the 4XX. It's definitely got more clarity and separation than the 6xxs, but it feels recessed in the midrange for vocals, which can give it a strange sound. It's also less exciting with less kick than the 6xx.
Comfort-wise, it's nowhere near the 6xx, but it's not as bad as I had originally stated. The headband is reasonably well padded, but I still feel like it needs to be smaller and clampier. Some deeper ear pads would probably help here too.

spronkI borrowed a Dragonfly v1.2 from someone at the office today and the HE4xx is much better on that little USB amp/dac than it is on my Mimby/Vali (1gen) stack. But it still sounds better directly connected to my Galaxy S7. I'm going to take the cans/dragonfly home tonight and give it a shot... just to make sure it's not my work computer USB that is causing the problem.
Comfort-wise, I still find the HE4xx lacking... right now I just don't see them as all-day listeners.

dasmanTook the dragonfly home along, with my office laptop, so I could A/B the HE4xx/dragonfly on both home desktop and work laptop.
There is a difference in sound quality depending my computer (desktop vs laptop). The laptop was not as wide a soundstage and sounded "closer"... more in your face. The desktop was definitely more spacious. Both sounded better than what I remember from laptop->dragonfly when at the office. No idea why there is a difference in laptop->dragonfly->HE4xx office vs home... maybe power related... no idea.
The above not withstanding, this exercise has driven home that the Mimby->Vali 1stgen->HE4xx is not a good pairing for me, so I guess I'm looking for a new amp for the office...

dasmanWell, the original he-400 had a burn in time of 150 hours. Most plannars have large numbers like that, probably because of the driver technology used.

Noldirif it was consistently poor with all sources, then I could believe burn-in as a possible cause. But the primary problem is when paired with a specific source/amp. That tells me it's not burn-in, but a problem pairing.

dasmanStill, I'd expect the sound to change after some burn-in. Perhaps that would make certain combo's sound better?

dasmanThe better plan is gift me your HD600 and HE4xx, and the Crack amp and the Vali, and get free from all the troubles.
