When you like bassguitar. Which headphone is better, the HD6XX or HE4XX? Overall I like detail with a slight warmth to the sound without supressing other frequenties. (Already joined the HD6XX drop because this one was not available back then)

WolffiMy honest opinion as a fellow bass guitar player/lover is that HD6XX will make you happier, but others will clearly disagree based on the reviews showing up here.
If you're listening to a 5/6 string, the low B fundamental will be a bit weak, but 4 string is covered beautifully, and the mids are not recessed/trampled like I experience on the HE4XX when not listening at quite a high volume. HD6XX is definitely smoother and more refined to my ear, but the sub bass is reduced in power, and the sound stage is much smaller.

WolffiIf you're interested in the accuracy of the notes and really feeling the bass guitar, the HE4XXs. If you're looking for the bass guitar to sound beautiful and warm, the 6XXs.

WolffiIt's widely accepted that the HE4XX has the more fun, punchier bass and warmer sound signature than the more neutral, highly detailed, slightly sibilant HD6XX, along with still being proficient at mids and only falling behind the HD6XX into the highs. For bassy music the HE4XX seems better outright.

HeeftyI think the HD6XX will suite my taste more indeed. Especially when I am really sitting down to listen. It is mostly relaxed music like Radiohead, Massive Attack, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, etc., etc.

WolffiThe real trick with them is that you need a beast of an amp to drive them well. They are just as punchy as the 4XX when properly amplified, but they are harder to properly amplify. I suppose I should have stated that up front... I forget to point that out to people. I already have powerful amps around, so I don't think about it.

HeeftyI do have a headphone amp, the Musical Fidelity V-can II. So far I'm impressed what it does to my Sonys. Small update: I Just joined the HE4XX drop aswell. I can probably sell the one I like the least without any losses.

WolffiPersonally I think closed back headphones are better for getting lower and better bass quantity. The HD6XX are alright, and cover the audio spectrum well. They seem to be able to reproduce down to 40-50Hz but overall dont have a lot of bass quantity, though they do have bass quality. The HE4XX sound good as well, and have quality bass but it drops off around 50Hz and has almost nothing below that, though the quality of the bass you do have is quite good. Just needs a bit more quantity. The TH-X00 have epic levels of mid bass, you might want to consider those. These too dont go down lower than about 35-40Hz though. The quality is also a bit lower, but it more than makes up for in quantity. I havent tried the TH-X00 purpleheart's though, and these look like the best of the whole ground in both quantity and quality naturally. Here is the EQ graphs for a comparison of all the TH-X00's, the puple line is the Purpleheart version:

Compare that to the graphs on the HD6XX and HE4XX pages.

EniGmA1987Thanks for the reply. I don't think that having a lot of bass means it is best at displaying bassguitar. Especially when listening to slap bass. There are some frequenties in the high mids/mids aswell. When looking at the graphs. The Hifiman has a strange dip in the 2 kHz. Whilst the HD6xx keeps is fairly flat. Eventhough the purple hearts look promising. It is way Out of my price league.
