Sennheiser PC37X randomly goes bad after disconnecting the cable ?
Greetings, Yesterday I was using my headset like normal with my macbook, just listening to music and on a call with people like usual, and the headset was perfectly fine. The stock wire that came with the headset is extremely long and yesterday it annoyed me very much that it kept getting tangled with itself, so I decided to see if the cable is replaceable. I pulled out the cable from the headset and saw the adapter, and looked online for a replacement. Upon plugging it back in, the audio sounded extremely muffled and washed out. Im not sure what I did wrong to make it mess up like that as I've always taken good care of it, ive had it for about 2 years and its always just been chilling on my desk, but anywho I thought the cable just went bad and ordered a replacement. The replacement came, and the issue is still persistant, so I am not sure what the issue is I've tried multiple different headsets and the issue is not with the port, and I also tried it with my windows laptop and...

Very non-destructive and simple...
so, after a lengthy listen on these HE4XXers, I found myself thinking that the stage could be improved just a tad. Lifting the bottoms of the cans ever so slightly from my jaw-line opened the sound BEAUTIFULLY. Grabbed a bit of the foam from a packing box, cut a couple of strips and mini-blocks from it, and, using some silk tape, which doesn't leave messy adhesive behind upon removal, attached the strips to the bottom rim of the pads. VOILÁ! Enough separation is achieved that the stage is improved dramatically. If it's not enough. one can shove the mini-blocks into position between the face and that taped-on strip. These clamp enough that the blocks don't just fall out during wear*.
* unless you are doing jumping jacks.....
:)
I tend to only listen to them alone at home, except for the terriers.
Who are pretty okay with :ridiculous";
Actually, when they are on, you don't really see that.
okay, you can see the tape.....
but..... in answer to your question......
YES.
LOL.
BTW Zeiss lens wipes are the BEST. I buy them in bulk. Now I have another use for the box.
Amazon BULK buy of the Zeiss. That, and Kimwipes for delicate surfaces, like glass.
It's tricky getting the Kimwipes box to fit a terrier head..... ...still working on that one.
been doing little simple-minded mods since my first quarter mod of a Grado set, then on to the more adventurous world of Fostex TRP50's a la HeadFi years ago.
yeah, sounds stupidly easy. sorry. It's just that the most important part of your comment is actually quite correct; people don't realize that they can do schtuff themselves to make things better and they worry a LOT about doing damage to something they saved, maybe for a year, or months, to buy.... I thought I'd chip up something easy and kind of funny, and that wouldn't harm the gear.
;)
but see? They clearly LOVE it. There's more to this than people know.
Really simple minded. Give it a whirl, see how it sounds to you. I just find myself liking improved stage maybe more than lotta bass. If I have to choose,(which I don't, since they invented the EQ), I'd pick better stage and a bit more air than a claustrophobic but very present bass.
Not to fear; these little bits of foam don't rob the bass.
...or are you talking about how much better the lens wipe boxes sound after slight modification by inserting a dogs head?
hey. did harvey just call me a "Subbass"?
not like Fostex, dig?
.....or are you using some vacuum tech mod that I'm not aware of? Like, Seal A Meal down over the head, before each listen?
unless I'm completely deaf.
Then it will be about the prettiest Tube Combination for my Woo amps to offer the most visually appealing aesthetic possible in a darkened room. If that ever happens, I'll offer the foam mods to you FIRST. ;)
BTW.... while that little mod I did affected the sound stage just a bit... it's also a bit of creative humour. I enjoy trying different little things with a sense of fun at the same time. Something stupid like this doesn't even require courage with your money, as it's so not permanent.
I think the best way to think about what I was doing is like thinking about how different ear-tips affect the sound of IEMs. Or how differently on-ears present sound than in-ears. In ears with a good and correct seal nearly ALWAYS offer more bass-ness, yet on-ear offer better stage and are at less risk of detail loss due to muffling caused by anatomy and poor ear-tip choice.
Have you got your HE4XXers yet? Are you liking them lots and lots?
Do you Grado?
I have found that I like these better for some musics, and my Senns better for other musics. I very much specialize which set of headphones and which rig I use to power them with each music type and listening situation. Just about striving for optimization of the experience, you know?
Which amp/rig will you be using to drive these?
cheers!
Length-wise;
End-on;
As you can see, the cans have sustained no damage from having put on the foam, removed when not in use;
And also- the separation is VERY discrete distance from your face. Because the foam compresses, there's only a very small air gap at your face below the ear. YOu may have to experiment with how thick yours need to be because it depends on how much clamping your headband does on your particular set of cans. Nice thing too; you can use these on other headphones. I think I want to work on a velcro version of these next. Not much knowledge about all things sewing though.... :(
Wonder how many in there understand the nuances of Velcro?
next thing ya know..... TiffanyPoodleslide X Massdrop HeadFoam Mods!

It took me some time with Dekoni pleather pads tonight to notice a _significant_ loss in the lower bass extension when "sealed". Now I notice it more that I know what I was missing. There's almost a percussive feeling we're losing out on.
Did you ever find a permanent solution for your earpads?
I also tried Brainwavz perforated pleather (too much distance between ear and driver) and Shure velours (more airy in the treble, but everything else is more muddled). The difference in the bass isn't as noticeable than with straight up pleather. Aside from the bass issue, I liked the sound more with the Dekonis...so I'm disappointed. Back to the stock pads for the time being.
I wonder if you could just put the wedgies sort of permanently on the Dekonis and then switch pads depending on what you are listening to. Wonder what would happen if you chose an inexpensive pad and tried cutting a wedge out of the bottom of each pad- instead of a wedge distancing the cup from your head, you have a gap in the pad itself. Hmm. I may have to do an experiment here.
