I like these more than any of my currently owned cans, which are:
Sennheiser HD 650's/600's AKG K712 Pro's Fostex TH-610's Bowers & Wilkins P7's (wired) Monoprice Monolith 560's
Tested with a Schiit Jotunheim (iPhone 6s>Schiit Wyrd>Schiit Jotunheim w/DAC module)
and
My usual listening setup: iPhone 6s>Schiit Wyrd>Schiit Modi 2 Über>Schiit Loki (EQ off)>Little Dot I+ with General Electric 5654W JAN tubes (matched)
feel free to use my ears and my equipment as guinea pigs (within reason). I also have a Schiit Magni 2 Über, a Schiit Fulla 2, and a Schiit Vali (1). As well as a pair of Beats solo 2's.

AthtelCan you describe the differences between the Monolith M560 and the He4XX? Do you actually have a chain of 5 devices that you use to listen to or are those just the options you have ?

RyCanYes I do use that chain of devices - except I just switched to the MagnI 2 Über instead of the Little Dot. I have been using my Jotunhiem more lately.
I can tell you from memory; I don’t have the m560’s with me right now. The 4xx’s are more full and alive then the m560’s, the bass is more present and and they sound better in my opinion. The m560’s feel thin and paper-y compared the 4xx’s, they‘re also lacking somewhat in the mid bass, though they do still good but not as good as the 4xx’s.

AthtelGreat. Thanks for the quick description. That eases my mind. They have the Monolith M560 on sale for $150 on the website and I was debating between those and the 4XX. I have the Senn 6XX I have been listening to for a few months and really like them but I really wanted to try planars out since everyone seem to talk about their bass is pronounced but not overpowering

AthtelHey mate, I'm considering a Fulla 2 as an upgrade from motherboard audio. Have you tried the 4xx with the Fulla? Does it drive them to a decent volume? Any info would be much appreciated.

Acheron_NZI haven't yet, but I'll set it and try it! Anything else you listen for besides the volume bit?

AthtelThanks! Besides volume, I'm interested if it sounds like the 4xx is being driven with enough power to sound 'full' with the Fulla 2. I'd be very interested to see how the Fulla 2 sounds compared to your beastly Jotunheim, or the Magni. Some people say you need a Magni to power these, but I can't afford a DAC, you see. So having a DAC/AMP combo like the Fulla 2 would be ideal, as long as the 4xx sounds good on it.

Acheron_NZFulla 2 vs. Jotty coming right up (give me a few day or so)! Unfortunately my Magni 2 Uber is being lent to friend while he gets his serviced..

Acheron_NZThe Jotty does sound better (smoother sounding mostly, more full less so) but, I feel the Fulla 2 is adequate and does drive them nicely. I was driving them off my MacBook Pro using it as a multi-output device running Tidal (HiFi) at 100% volume on my Mac and 50% on the Fulla 2 and ~55% on the Jotty (low gain). The Fulla 2 did start getting distortion-y at 60%+ or so but that’s a known issue and it still gets plenty loud.

Acheron_NZDefinitely the Fulla 2 will get you to more than adequate volumes. I'm listening to 4XX on a Fulla 2 as I write this, sourced with a business class lenovo laptop. With the system volume at max, 9:00 on Fulla 2 dial is plenty loud, and 12:00 is as loud as I'd want ever want it for a short period. Too loud for long periods. My normal quiet room/office volume is probably 8:00. As far as sound quality, it's quite good. Maybe a little less full sounding in the low end than Magni2/Modi2 stack, but still quite good.
