Is the half ring holding the headphones in place plastic or metal(the part that clips into the actual holes on the headphones). I know it's originally plastic but I'm curious if the massdrop version was improved.

KaydermoThanks! I guess I don't know enough about headphones to know what a "gimbal" is, so I wasn't sure which part that referred to, the vertical bar or the part that attached to the actual cups.
I ordered the HE400I and ended up returning them because the plastic snapped within a month. I joined the drop for the HD6XX so will have to pass on this but if it weren't for that defect I would have held on to the HIFIMANs since they were my first higher end headphone and I liked the sound(the comfort wasn't great but maybe they needed to stretch out some more with use). My E10k also is adequate for the hifimans, but I'll have to get a better amp or amp/dac combo for the 6XX. I might get a O2 amp and pair it with my E10k or maybe get the monoprice https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=11567#specificationsTab and sell my 10K. I really am totally new to the necessity of amps to properly drive headphones.
Good to know the massdrop version fixed that issue.

jwest88I had similar experience with 400i. I loved the sound, but they broke after 3 weeks. I ordered the 4xx on the last drop and hope to be getting them in April. I also have the 6xx and recommend giving them as much power as possible. My initial impression of the 6xx were not that great. However, since I have been using them with a DarkVoice 336 SE, I am now a huge fan.
I can’t wait to see how the 4xx sound with the DV.

mindhead1If that's the case I think I'll go for the O2 amp to combine it with my E10K as the dac. I've read people saying it sounded good. I have 4 months to decide on one, so I guess there's no rush.
I hope you have a good experience with the 4XXs.

jwest88If it came with a plastic yoke I would have passed. Have to say i was really drawn to the build of the HE 4XX.
