Just recieved my long awaited 4xx. Going through the visual checks, everything seems ok.
Scheduling sequence planned: 1. Listening directly via Galaxy note 8. 2. Listening directly from Chord mojo. 3. Listening directly from the DV 336se.

B1gdee05Very interested to hear your thoughts on the DV336SE -> 4xx combo.
I have had my DV since Saturday and love what it has done for my 6xx.

Dovahkiin4 LISTENING HIFIMAN 4XX EXPERIENCE'S VIA EXTERNAL AMPLIFIER SOURCES
General Set up: 1. Music source is my Samsung Galaxy Note 8. 2. Arcam Bluetooh receiver connected to the Darkvoice 336SE and the SMSL SAPII via RCA connections using a two way splitter between the two amplifiers.
4XX Directly into the Samsung Galaxy Note 8: Sound Quality is okay and clear, however you need more volume to hear and benefit from the 4XX true hearing experience.
4XX Directly into the Chord Mojo via Samsung Galaxy Note 8: Sound Quality is superb. The 4XX comes alive with the clarity, openess and sound imaging. You can hear every word and instruments played. The hi's is precise the mids and lows is enough to say YES, YES...
4XX Directly into the Darkvoice 336SE via Samung Galaxy Note 8: Well the 4XX Planar does not work well on vacuum tube amplifiers. The sound was very low, it was like there was not enough power to push the 4XX and I know the DV336SE has power. (The Sennheiser HD 600 range via DV336SE is awesome).
4XX Directly into the SMSL SAPII via the Samsung Galaxy Note 8: Very similar listening experience as the Chord Mojo, however the volume peaks out at the top end (needs a little more power). Where the Mojo keeps on going before distorion takes place. But for the price the SMSL is a sure bet. ( The Chord Mojo is a bit too pricey).
Conclusion so far: Because the 4XX is designed for mobile use and the Chord Mojo is portable, I am currently using this type of setup. However if you are at home in a fixed setup then the 4XX via the SMSL SAPII is perfectly adquate to hear the 4XX true experience.
Enjoy!!

B1gdee05Good to know. My experience with planar headphones tells me that they are picky with amps. Before my 400i broke I found they didn’t work well with my Aune X1S 10th, but were excellent with the Topping NX4. I also had a set of Mayflower T50RP mkIII for a short while and they were also poor performers with the X1S.
DV and 6xx are a winner.

mindhead1Thanks As I said the 4XX is a great pair of cans, but the DV336SE cannot drive 4XX to it fullest capability like what it can do to Sennheisser 6XX. I have got both of them..

mindhead1I had done some research and found that planar and OTL amps don't usually work together to well as most have high impedance inputs and planars are mostly low impedance so a low impedance input usually works best. Not to say that you can't use tubes with them but you will need a hybrid (solid state with tubes).

B1gdee05Good to know. I'm wondering if the impedance is why the planar headphones I have tried with the X1S amp don not sound good. I can't find a specific spec on the X1S output impedance, but have seen it referenced at 10ohm.
While I like the X1S as a DAC, it may not be the ideal amp for my desktop. I'll see how it performs with the 4xx before I make a move. My ideal is to use my DV and 6xx as my living room setup and the 4xx and a good DAC/Amp as my desk setup.
