Is the Fiio Q5 powerful enough to drive these to the fullest extent if using a balanced cable? Output is ~450mW @ 32 ohms.
Because as of know how just plugging these into a phone and listening to a FLAC, my Phillips SHP9500s sound better and more immersive than these.
Even at full volume the planars sound quiet.
I'm 90% certain it's because it needs more juice.
I would be surprised if the HE4XX'S still sounded worse than the SHP9500 after getting a Q5.
And it's not just my subjective taste on sound signature - I can hear the 9500s have a wider soundstage and clearer treble, although more distorted at full volume.

DogesI have a FiiO X7 Mk2 DAP, and a FiiO Q1 Mk2 DAC/Amp and neither pushed the HE4xx’s to decent levels. Once I got the Topping NX4 DSD Dac/Amp the HE4xx’s are my new go-to headphones for portable use. And i have a pretty good selection of headphones (Senns HD650, Philips shp9500 modded, philips X1, philips X2, and Audio-Technica ATH-M60x) HE4XX’s soundstage is superb, even better after removing the cloth from the grills. They are really immersive. The bass is tight just not much sub base. The treble was a little bright for me but a piece of TP between the driver and earpad cleaned that up. Once Massdrop opens the drop for the ZMF Ori pads my He4xx’s will be perfect.

hsdrggrAwesome mods. You really got the cans to shine, even fixing the bright treble.
By TP you mean toilet paper? 2-ply?
I was unaware of a ZMF Ori pad upcoming drop. Sounds sweet!

DogesTo get the best out of these you need around 1.4W. Planars take some current to drive them properly.
