As a former RE-0 owner I just ordered two of these. These were my gateway drug into audiophilia. I originally bought them around 2008 or so and became addicted to their fantastic treble detail. After maybe 10 months of use and multiple times catching the cord on something and ripping them out of my ears, the left channel began to cut out intermittently so I send them in to be replaced under warranty without issue. The second pair (now branded Hifiman rather then head-direct) lasted a good 2-3 or so years of abuse before another intermittent left channel. So these are not indestructible, but if you take better care of them I'm sure they would last. Personally I think they were a great build quality, just not indestructible.
After my second pair went down I wanted to buy another pair only to find they were discontinued. So I bought the RE-400. The RE-400 just didn't have the presence in super highs to satisify my needs. The 400 has arguably better bass, great mids and is incredibly smooth sounding but they just rolled of the treble too early for my tastes. I used them as my main iem for six months or so before getting the DN-1000 which had similar treble detail and extension to the RE-0 and I've been satisfied with them as my IEM since. I also own the HE-560 which have survived my abuse for over a year and half.
Then I saw this drop and immediately joined. You will never get a more detailed sound for less money ever.
For the money this is a no brainer, but...
These are not a bass heavy phone.
They have been called an analytical sound signature.
They do not require and amp but will benefit from one.
If you have any interest at all, just buy it. If you're worried about the price, I advise you to get out of audio all together and by a 35 dollar bag of rice or box of ramen etc.
Edit: I also own the Ostry KC06A which have a funner sound signature but can not touch the RE-0 in treble detail and extension. I will be reaching for the RE-00 once the arrive instead of the Ostry.

slambanna@slambanna Great comparison. Thank you. If you don't mind asking, how do you compare this with GR07 Classic? i am keen to purchase either of them and it would be greatly helpful if you can share your impression if you can. :)

decommoSorry I haven't heard the GR07 personally. I remember looking at them when I bought the DN-1000. IIRC they were said they were said to have a bit a grating treble(I could be completely wrong here). I can say that I remember the RE-0 did an amazing job at providing treble detail and extension without becoming fatiguing.
We won't see the RE-00 until August so I recommend you go for the GR-07 or something similar if you want an IEM right away. If you prefer another headphone to the RE-00 in August, I feel confident you will be able to convince a friend to take them off your hands for 40 bucks.

FutureLegendsYYCJust get a nice carrying case so the wires don't stretch, you have time as the damn earphones ship in about 2 months

FutureLegendsYYCBasically, don't treat them like Apples disgustingly overrated ear buds. They aren't a delicate little flower but they are. If you're using them day to day, which I'm assuming you will be, as CuriousTechGuy has said, get a nice carrying case. What I used to do is pull the earbuds from under my shirt and let them hang from the collar or around my neck so I don't have to keep them in a tight space that makes the wires a hot mess. I personally won't do the shirt thing as it ruins the collars on many thinner woven shirts.

FutureLegendsYYCI agree with the previous two replies. Using a shirt clip from another pair of earbuds like the Branwavz Betas might also help prolong the life of the earbuds.

CuriousTechGuyoh what the hell. Not surprising, mass drop keeps bumping up the time left on the hifiman drops. Hella suspect
