Just got around to opening these up. I think the sound is decent. I am in no way a IEM expert, but for $35 I think they are good.
People who are complaining possibly are not amping these. They are power hungry. I ran them first directly out of an iPod classic and felt meh. Fiio e18k, low gain + bass boost and volume at 5 and the bass is no where near lacking.
Fwiw I'm currently listening to drum and bass and feel satisfied. Sure, they are not the Ultrasone pro 900 that I just sold, but they are pretty damn good for $35.
For reference, my headphone lineup currently is beyerdynamic 990, sennheiser hd700, akg k812, hifiman he 350, audio Technica m50x, Sony mdr7506

PfgivNice headphone collection! How do you like the 7506 vs the M50? I have the 7506 and have used the M50 but I don't like the crazy boosted low end and screechy high imo. I really wanted to like them but they just weren't amazing to my ears.

master_sifuYeah they are totally different. 7506 is more for monitoring purpose, the low end is very recessed. M50x is very bass heavy. The 7506 is a good headphone but I can't listen to them for long periods. I enjoy the signature but the high end can become too shrill depending on the song, and it can be taxing for long listening. Most people describe the 50s as U or V shaped, I would not classify the 7506 that way. It all comes down to what you prefer though. I would say the 7506 is more accurate, while the m50 is less picky.
I enjoy music and different sound that different headphones produce so I'm always buying and selling in search of the perfect one. As I said I recently sold Ultrasone pro 900, as well as sennheiser hd598, and akg Q701

master_sifuOhh and I forgot, you can add Fostex TH-x00 Ebony to the collection as well. Can't wait for these to arrive!

PfgivYeah, I think I can agree with your description of the 7506. I really like the 7506 and I think the low end is mostly flat but I would like to eventually get the M40x to compare the two. What made you sell the HD598? I've always heard good things about those headphones.

master_sifuThey are very good, but when I upgrade I usually find something to go. 598 was my first open headphone. Sounded excellent, until I got he hd700. The 7 is no where near perfect, and the highs are a bit excessive as many will note. However, the clarity over the 598 is significant. I can't compare to the 600 or 650 because I haven't heard either but many prefer either of those to the 7. At the 100$ price point for the 598 (Amazon Black Friday) it's a no brainier. If your end goal like me is hd800s, k812 T1 and a high end planar, then you can probably skip the 598.

PfgivAh ok, that totally makes sense. Thanks for replying so quickly! I'll keep that in mind when upgrading. My first experience with any sort of open back is the Samson SR850. Great for 25 bucks on sale, but it can't compete with other headphones in higher price brackets such as the Philips SHP9500 or the Sennheiser HD500 series, or anything higher for that matter lol.

master_sifuNo problem, I don't have any experience with any of those. I too started on some of the low end stuff just to try some "audiophile" level stuff. AKG K619 was only 30$ I think so I bit, and while they sound ok, it always leaves you wanting more. Gotta hit the $100 mark to get something really quality, and that's the 598, imho.

PfgivWhat's your opinion on the Fostex T50rp MKiii? I've heard really good things about it but I don't know if that's a good choice in the $100+ range

master_sifuI haven't heard anything from Fostex ever, funny I bit on $500 headphones from a company I haven't heard anything from ever huh. Yeah audiophilia is def a sickness.
In general, they are a very well respected quality company. I would think they are very good headphones

PfgivYeah, that's what I was thinking as well. And nah, that's not so crazy. As you said, they're very well respected, and the x00 is one of the most positively reviewed headphones.
