Am completely clueless about mechanical keyboards and am looking to get this one as my first. I should ideally go with something like a Varmilio etc. I guess but there is no resale potential of these keyboards in my country so I'd just end up saddled with multiple keyboards that I cant get rid off. As reference, Im currently using a MS Natural keyboard which has gotten really irritating due to sticky keys
So is this a good and possibly last buy for a beginner? 1. Will this work seamlessly with a Mac? Including the cli tool thats required for updating the firmware? 2. I'm assuming the function layers are like mapping macros? Or are they mapped to just one key? 3. How easy will this be to clean? There is a shit ton of dust where I live and I also have three cats that shed like nobody's business :) Thanks!

indialogueGood morning!
1) Yes this will work with a Mac including the CLI. 2) Yes the function keys can be assigned to any key (or multi-key press) 3) It depends on how deep of a cleaning you would want to do. If you use canned air or compressed air it would be pretty quick if you did it every day (just give it a spray down) if you wanted to completely take it apart it wouldn't be too bad either because you can remove the switches and such.

indialogueI think it's a great board for a beginner who doesn't want to be buying multiple boards. The board quality looks to be really good. If you end up not liking the switches you get, you can just swap them out without having to solder.
1. It should work great with a Mac, but you might want someone with actual experience to confirm. As far as I can tell, the Input Club configurator is 100% web-based, so you can do your configuration in a webpage, and it generates a firmware file for you to upload to the keyboard.
2. Function layers are basically, when you're in that "layer" your entire keyboard can be bound to different keys if you wish. You can bind a key to cycle you to the next function layer, or previous, or send you to a specific function layer. So if you wanted, you could have one function layer that is basically "num lock" and emulates a num pad (RealForce does this on their boards). I'm not really sure what else people do with it as I've never had a board that supports layering yet. Check out https://input.club/configurator/ as that is their configurator for WhiteFox and will most likely be very similar for this board and it might make more sense if you see it visually.
3. I find most mech keyboards are pretty easy to clean as long as you don't spill stuff inside the bezel. Just pop all the caps off and use a canned air on it. For stuff in between the keys I use a Q-tip. I'm not really sure if this board is going to be easier or harder to clean than normal though. I will say that this board will almost certainly be really easy to open up, so if you do have hair/dust floating into the part that's normally hard to access, this board will make that part easier.

indialogueyour one lucky guy to start of with such a great keyboard . i have bin following this keyboard for over 2yr now on several forums. And have bought lots of other keyboards spending an obscene amount on Customs fees becuase i live in Eu (The Netherlands) but i'm going to sell one of my mx-clear FC660M boards to help fund this board. i would buy this one instead of the Farmilo board. because of the hotswap and programability. But if you don't care about all that just buy my FC660M with mx-clears.

TuxKeyIf you're selling an FC660M with MX-Clears, I'd definitely be interested in buying. Will you be selling it on eBay?

Dok101no on mechmarket. reddit..you can also reach me true https://deskthority.net username TuxKey. btw heard from the only EU reseller of Leopold that they stopped making mx-clear boards so the value is sure to go up. Awesome ahahah but don't worry i'm not a ferengi (startrek) i believe in fare pricing.. i payed well over €204 for the board with shipping and customs that's with the extra full PBT keycap set i got for them. if i can get €160 for it i would be happy . you can pick up a mx-brown board for less. i think around 130 or 140. so the price is fair i think.. i used my board a couple times in rotation but i spend more time on my Topre boards. And i don't connect the board directly to the usb but use an adapter so to keep the usb port as new. i'm a bit anal when it comes to my keyboards hahaha

TuxKeyI recently calculated my total keyboard expenses, including shipping to the Netherlands. I'm so glad I don't have the customs fees stored anywhere. I spent $1000 on actual keyboard stuff, another $200 on shipping. Customs fees however are obscene sometimes.

TTheunsto be honest with you i don't mind custom fees as a matter of principal. What i mean is i understand the reason for taxes. But i also know that big companies use so called tax loop holes and we have so called post-box / letterbox construction in Amsterdam. Also i believe in a free market and free competition to all not just big companies and crapping over the little guy trying to enjoy his/her hobby. So if i buy something that's available inside the EU then i should pay tax+customs fees as i could have gotten in Europe but i wanted to get it cheaper and so cost EU citizens jobs + income and so forth. But this product is not sold in the EU and has nothing to do with the bloody EU and The Netherlands so why the heck do i need to pay? i already paid twice for the $210 i'm spending on this keyboard. once when i made the $$ and once when i left it on my savings account for more then a year. It boggles the mind. Massdrop needs to open a warehouse in Eu ASAP.

TuxKeyHow about we set one up in NL? Purely hypothetical, of course.

TTheunstalked to a couple of people even keyboard resellers that look at the massdrop concept and think they want to do that. i would only start such a thing if its community driven i don't need or want to live from it. for now i'm to busy studying for my Linux Certs otherwise i would have done so hahaha . who knows perhaps in the future..there is a Dutch Slack site where we meet. And there is Deskthority ...for now ;-)

TuxKeyYeah without a community backing it up it would be doomed from the start. The Dutch scene is relatively big, but not big enough to support such a project on its own. Sad thing then is that shipping to across the border from the NL still is pretty steep. Add an economics minor to your current curriculum and who knows :P

TTheunshahha neh i leave the economics of it all to my wife.. perhaps next year when i start "HBO ict" studies for now it's home studying just Linux no economics. in regards to how small The Netherlands is. i just finished mailing Hasu from china thanking him for a programable module turning the FC660C in to a fully programmable board how cool is that. It looks like 7 people including ordered one from The Netherlands Germany had 11 customers ;-) Denmark 3 And the UK 5. and lots more but the list goes down from there like 1 or 2 people for that country. But still it's more than i expected. Still doesn't match the 70 people that ordered one from the us. hahaha..ah well we will have to stay vocal and show that we also matter..

TuxKeyHasu's little module is a great product, I almost feel bad I don't need it. Maybe I'll use a similar product in the future for an FC980M (with JTK sliders) which I hope to obtain at some point. 7/17121906 x100% = 0.000041% of our population bought it. 70/ 325144803 x100% = 0.000022% of the USA population bought it. And this is for a niche product. I'm actually impressed.
