I received my LSR30X. I am upset because I believe this transaction has resulted in me being scammed out of $38.61 CAD which, as far as I can tell, was charged to me illegitimately.
I live in Canada. So I paid the drop price, plus a shipping charge. On top of that, I expected to pay the relevant taxes and duties and handling fees for the price of the speakers at the time when they were delivered. So I am not complaining about paying those monies which I should legitimately owe.
At my post office, two parcels arrived at the same time.
One parcel contained the LSR30X speakers. I had to pay the taxes and handling fees on that parcel.
Another parcel contained the 10 ft. 3.5mm to Dual 1/4" Hosa cable. I had to pay taxes and handling fees on that parcel too, which were *separate from and in addition to* the taxes & fees of the first parcel which contained only the speakers.
For the cable parcel alone, I was charged the aforementioned outrageous fee of $38.61 CAD. That was broken down on the reference label as $5.21 in duties, $23.40 in taxes, and $10 in fees. As far as I can tell, that math does not add up, and these charges are not fair.
I checked the price of that same Hosa cable online. Amazon.com sell its for $6.95 USD. If we convert that to CAD at the current rate, it would have a legitimate value of $8.66 CAD. The tax rate for where I live is 13%. So if I was taxed on the actual value of the cable, the amount of taxes I pay should be $1.13 CAD. Yet remember, instead of paying $1.13 CAD in taxes on this parcel which only contained the cable, I was somehow forced to pay $23.40 CAD in taxes!
Moreover, on cross-border shipments that are valued at less than $20 USD, customs & Canada Post usually never charge any taxes, dutes, or handling fees. So chances are very close to 100% that if the customs value of the cable was declared accurately, as $8.66, then customs and Canada Post would have both chosen to charge me no more than $0 for this cable parcel.
The only reason I paid for the cable parcel's outrageous $38.61 fee was because I thought inside the box was an amp & DAC that I had been expecting, which I had ordered separately. If I had known when I was at the post office that that box contained just the $9 CAD Hosa cable - which I don't want and can't use - then I would have refused to pay that $38.61 fee for it. Now, since I did pay that fee, I feel like a fool who was bamboozled.
In my best estimation, this illegitimate charge stems from Massdrop sub-contracting the shipping to DHL before it reached Canada Post. I presume that DHL listed an outrageously high, inaccurate value on the customs paperwork for the Hosa cable, which in turn led Canada Customs & Canada Post to charge me fees that they should not have, based upon that inaccurate customs value. However, I am unable to determine what value DHL did list on their customs paper work, since that customs paperwork was totally absent from the parcel (it was neither outside of nor inside the box).
I have tried contacting Massdrop support with a truncated version of this post, but so far I haven't heard back from them.
What do you all think about the things I've said in this post? Did I not get scammed?

CalisI feel for you and all my Canadian friends, you can blame your government, they are thirsty for Canadian citizens money by slapping large tax an duty fees. Blame Massdrop for not shipping the cable with the monitor in one package and last blame yourself for wanting such a great pair of monitors, at least you’ll have a great time listening to music while getting mad at the government and Massdrop.

MusicIsGreatI wish Massdrop offered the option for international customers exclusively to use the United States Postal Service. That would probably eliminate all of these bogus charge shenanigans that tend to occur when courier companies handle cross-border shipments.

MusicIsGreatThe tax I'm OK with. It amounts to our federal and provincial sales tax. Our currency is a problem at 70 cents on the US dollar. DHL's fee should be shown in massdrop's shipping fee that's an ongoing issue. So even when a product looks like half of the going price in Canada, it works out to 25% off our price. At that point you may as well give the local shop the business.

CalisWould it have been possible to just pay for the speakers and refuse the cable box?
