Considering these vs. ELAC Debut B5/6 or KEF LS50. Anyone with thoughts? I know KEF is much more money but apparently amazing. From what I read, though, they all are.

HyeGIMDI have both the Lsr 308 and LS 50.Don't believe everything you read as different speakers are targeted for different market. Having bought the LS 308 base on the overwhelming reviews, I don't know how people actually make "professional mix" out of them as they have no where the resolution and clarity of LS 50. I am not a pro but maybe clarity and resolution isn't as important for mixing. Perhaps it is the cheap class D amp or the driver but it is clearly not in the same class as LS 50 and don't cheap out and expect miracles base on other people's reviews. They sound great if you never actually heard great speakers. There are number of cheaper alternatives to LS 50 that will get much closer to its sound at a cheaper price but no way is this one of them.

HyeGIMDOh,and neither is B6. I personally have the Polk Lsim 703 and Chane 2.4 that are both much closer to LS 50 SQ and can be had for about half of the retail price of LS 50 if you look around and I am sure more alternatives can be found if you research on the audio forums like AVS,Audioholics,or Audiogons..........Don't pay attention to Amazon reviews if you are serious about Audio.

bargainhunter888Thanks for the feedback about the LS50. I can say that I have listened to the 308, and the 305, but not the LS50. The 308's have more bass, but overall its not as clear as the 305's. My thoughts are that if you want 308 size and bass, get 305's and a sub. A popular size for studio monitors is a 5 inch woofer, which both the LS50 and 305's do. If I had the budget, I would be looking at the LS50 (also need a worthy amp, or the powered ones).

eschat8"driver is not going to be as accurate as a 5" for midrange. There is no doubt about that, but there is a such a substantial difference,I think it is more than that.It maybe a problem with the driver itself but I think the bigger problem might be the amp.The speaker itself sounds like it is being played with a cheap receiver or DAC or in direct mode from digital source. It sounds really grainy. There is no way to know for sure unless one open it up and drive it with a good amplifier, but IF I had a budget restraint,I would try the Emotiva's as they have good audiophile quality amp in their monitor and you at least eliminate one variable. In any case, I am not bashing the Lsr's as I think most people would be happy with them. I am just saying there is still a huge gap between these and LS 50 and we should not fool ourselves expecting miracles at this price. I fooled myself and I am just sharing the experience.

bargainhunter888Thanks, helps a lot. I was using reviews from CNET, Z reviews, Audiophiliac and they are glowing on all of these. As with your name "bargainhunter," I am more excited finding great values and diamonds in the rough than just wasting money. It is unfortunate nowadays there are so few stores to actually listen to these products and we have to roll the dice based on the online reviews.

bargainhunter888I got the LS308s for that extra bass down low, I use them for movies. They lack a little depth and frankly they can be really grainy in the upper mid range especially. I've got a Schiit SYS and JDS Labs EL Dac sourcing them from the Optical out of my TV
I thought to get the LSR 305s or get in on the LS 30X drop, but for movies and TV I think the extra response of the larger driver makes a difference. Lows have some pretty amazing power which I'm really diggin and believe it or not they scale with nicer dacs. As far as the accuracy lacking because of the bigger driver, I can't speak for that. At some point I'll likely pick up 2 Pangea Power Cables for them and switch my SYS to a Schiit Saga, the addition of a Tube should help with the Imaging overall and add soften up what I feel is a very hard top end. I've already got them running through a power conditioner in the movie room. But given the smaller size of our movie room I doubt these will ever really compete with more competitive products in terms of accuracy, precision and imaging overall. Any upgrades I throw at them are only to maximize the movie experience and to get to play around with a Tube Pre, as I'm sure I'll find a better use for it later down the road.
I've not heard the Kef LS 50s either, I paid $400 for my LSR308s but I also got a 36month 0% financing offer, so that worked better for me. Plus I've got mine on Stands next to out television, I had no space for the smaller ones on my Desk. Still though had I known these would drop down as low as $179 for a PAIR!!! Which is crazy, I'd have gotten these for sure.
Non the less I'm impressed with the larger driver, and I'd encourage any one on the fence to grab these! The JBL Professional Speaker sound as I'm experiencing with the larger model is pretty impressive. It's not the END game in clarity imaging or resolve but they are stunningly balanced in frequency response
wishing I'd waited a little longer before I got a pair of speakers my self, either way though this is a good deal guys! If you don't have any speakers yet I'd grab these, heck if I had an extra $180 I'd get a pair my self too lol

MshenayI got my 308 for at $129 each from B&H with next day from NY to CA believe it or not so I had a pretty darn good deal and the primary reason that I got it.I have them driving my kitchen tv and for the price I am fine with it. The sound-stage and the balance is as advertised but resolution and detail is lacking, but I have substantial hi-res files and it really shows itself, and I would not use them as my primary speakers but I would definitely agree that these are a bargain at this price for their performance, one is probably not going to get better at this price for an active monitor.

bargainhunter888The Mackie MR624 (w/ 6.5" woofers) is probably the best bang-for-your-buck powered monitor now at $159.99 each.

bargainhunter888I've been eyeing the LS50W for many many months, but ended up getting the LSR30X instead. I just received them yesterday so I haven't had a ton of listening time, but they are good for my current needs. My goal now is to avoid hearing the LS50W's.... :-) I appreciate your thoughts and know that somewhere down the line I'll probably pick a set up!

HyeGIMDThey're completely different classes of speaker. These are great for a $180 pair of speakers but they are obviously not going to be anywhere near the level of speakers that retail for almost 10x the price.
