I've had mine for a few weeks now. These really do sound darn good, and for the price are fantastic. If you have the desk space I'd definitely recommend these for your desk and even as to fill a small to medium room (but these really shine on a desk for near field listening).
They obviously blow away my old M-Audio AV40s, but that to be expected. The M-Audio's are pretty nice for what they are, these are just in a different league.
I recently also got a pair of Swan M200 MKIIIs and it to soon for me to make a comparison, especially is I need to set them up in a way that is conducive to a good and fair comparison (right now the Swans are sitting ontop of the LSR30Xs and donve have the cabling to have both connected to the same DAC). My initial impressions is that JBL compare fairly well especially considering the price difference. They Swans well for about $360, though I got mine for $270 from Chane Music and Cinema (best price around).
Someone else said these need a sub, I would disagree. Yes, I sub really helps fill out the sound especially with modern music and songs with deep bass, but they produce an impressive amount of bass on a desk. Most music is still very enjoyable as is, but I sub can make it even better of course. Just don't feel you need to go out a get one right away.
I believe someone here said the mids where a bit recessed. I've never felt that way at all. In fact my initial impressions is that vocals sound a bit more forward than the Swans (the Swans might actually sound more natural), but I will reserve final judgement until I can make a more controlled setup for comparison.
Initialy I wasn't a fan of the idea of a piano finish. I must admit it look really good. After hearing the 305s constantly called bland and utilitarian looking, I'm actually glad I got the gloss finish, at add a touch of class.
Bottom line at $180 these are FANTASTIC speakers and put high quality audio in the hands of those that can't or don't yet want to spend more to get it. I could be happy with these as my only speakers, but me being me, I'm going to want to get others to compare.
