ThreepE0No, it's not.

CotayYes. Yes it is. You get quality keycaps with some keyboards that cost little more than this total. At the end of the day, they're plastic and simply aren't worth this much. I've done a bit of research, and the resources needed to make these keys aren't terribly expensive. I'd rather invest in that than someone who has taken on the overhead and is trying to make their money back (too quickly in this case, in my opinion)

ThreepE0Exactly what are some of those keyboards that will have keysets comparable to custom color GMK double-shots?

ThreepE0 Sure you have.
If you actually did your research like you said you did, you'd know that GMK acquired Cherry's original doubleshot molding tooling. These tooling machines are extremely expensive. GMK's primary target audience is the industrial and business sector, not niche keyboard enthusiasts. Hence, when they take time out of their production schedule to make these group runs, it costs them money. That cost needs to be passed onto the consumer, but in return, we get peace of mind knowing we'll receive high quality key caps. I challenge you to go on the market and find a comparable set of doubleshot ABS keycaps. You don't think the keyboard community has already looked? EnjoyPBT (PBT, not ABS) would be the only one comparable, but even then, their sets don't come with as many as GMK. JTK is also another producer but lack quality control.

fanman888Sure I have?  You're a peach, huh?  It doesn't matter to me (it might to you) that GMK whatever blah doesn't matter to me;  The fact of the matter is, it's not difficult to make your own key caps using cnc-machined molds, or you could machine the keys themselves.  Whether they're made of exactly the same material doesn't matter to me, and is something that is outweighed by the idea of paying well over $100 for a single set of caps.  I HAVE done my research as far as making key caps that meet my needs, and if I make them myself, I'd be saving money and getting a more personalized product.  I don't care whether it was made with GMK's tooling, it makes absolutely no difference to me.  No matter who owns what tooling, or how expensive that industrial-grade tooling is, you can't get past the fact that what you're getting is plastic, with no moving parts, and no substantial packaging cost.  If you think there isn't a ridiculous markup because there's a niche market for it, you're soft.

ThreepE0Be my guest, go ahead and CNC your own molds. Come back to the keyboard community when you have a comparable doubleshot ABS key set for a cheaper price. I'd be happy to be your first customer.
You don't think others haven't tried? JTK has been trying for over 2 years with numerous runs yet still faces quality control issues (they still offer a bargain quality/price product). Not to mention their sets don't come with nearly as many keys as GMK sets. But you're so confident in yourself so why don't you put your money where your mouth is and produce a cheaper comparable set. I'll be waiting with my wallet.

fanman888Actually, yeah I do think others have tried, and they've come up with some pretty cool stuff.  You must have seen some of the 3d printed or CNC-machined caps out there. They not these apparently legendary key caps, but they're just key caps, which was my point to begin with;  I'm not saying I'm going to reproduce the characteristics of these keys, what I'm saying is that they're expensive, and I think I can create something that will look cool and make me happy for cheaper.  If you look through the comments here, I'm not the only one who feels that way.  Listen, we're not going to agree;  The point is that you see value here, and while I see quality, the value at this price point is harder for me to grasp.

ThreepE0It's still irrelevant though. I see bling, the set's pretty, I have disposable income, the price is reasonable. That's enough for apparently almost 800 others who do not feel the need to justify their purchase. Is it expensive? Relatively. It's all about perspective.

ThreepE0Your post was essentially "stop liking what I don't like." There are roughly 800 people who are happy to spend money on the quality and form factor of this set. Was anyone asking you to understand? No. Do you also stand outside the apple store when a new laptop launches or when Nike releases a new shoe and question why people are making their relatively expensive purchases? The majority of mechanical keyboard enthusiasts realize this is a niche hobby and you pay for the things you want. Are there other options to this keycap set? Yes. Could you ultimately make something comparable? Yes. Can you own this set and also a cheaper set? Amazingly yes also. The fact of the matter is it's hard to match everything this set has to offer and that comes with a price that enthusiasts understand and are willing to pay. All your posts contain valid opinions but you're obviously not the audience here so I don't understand your insistence.

ThreepE0I don't get it... if you're that against then why even look and comment? Just keep moving along and let the people that want to pay for them be. It seems like you're bored and really just like arguing on the internet.

ThreepE0If all you want is "just keycaps" then you can get sets for less than $10.
Why bother with CNC machining, molds, casting, or whatever other methods if all you want are "just keycaps"?
Because you want something specific that isn't otherwise available, right? Well, hey, that's exactly what this offers for 800+ people as well. Go figure!
I'll never understand the need of people to come into these threads to make such silly arguments. You start off with a blanket statement, then after being called on it decide to narrow the scope to say they're too expensive for "your needs"; all while belittling others and calling them names. It's completely unnecessary.

ThreepE0Look everyone. It's the extinct dodo. Like coming back from that wasn't hard enough, he's also going to produce keycap sets on the fly for cheap. Magical. I can't wait to get my hands on these...
I should really not respond but I just can't help it.
