TBH the frame/housing around the speakers looks kinda.... flimsy. But, for some damn reason... I want them? The specs look nice and I like that they fold up. They're pretty cheap too and if they actually sound good... well heck..
BTW - What is that screw thing that's on one side?

KM1337The Porta Pros were originally a spinoff to the Pro 4 headsets, which had a screw covering an input for a microphone. It's an artefact of the time, but I'm p sure you can screw a mic on if you want to.

SijlFrom the banner picture, it appears that it's just a screw in a hole... I wonder if there is any functionality with that or if they just kept it there for aesthetics. Thanks for the info, I did not know about that!

KM1337I had a normal pair of these a few years back and they are definately a lot stronger than they look, very high quality plastic, just don't sit on them or something, obviously.
As for the screw, there is actually a fairly rare headset version of the PortaPro called the 'speak easy', which has a small boom microphone that's mounted where that screw is, only seems to be available in really obscure places like sweden, czech republic and austria, no idea why.

the13lawHMMMMMMM Very interesting... Is that a proprietary mount then? Or would you be able to attach a modmic or similar to it??

KM1337The Portapros are some excellent-sounding, bass-y, open-backed headphones for sure, and solidly built. It doesn't hurt that they fold up to the size of a baseball. On the other hand, they can be pretty uncomfortable to wear, and they tend to slide off my small-ish head.

RegalI feel like they could have made the head band a little more than just a literal metal band, maybe match the width of the driver housing? But that may stray away too much from the nostalgic appeal and may effect the portability... but I think I would consider it more if it looked like it'd be more comfortable... It does have a certain appeal to it though and seeing all the positive things about the OG models def makes it look better. With saving up for the Laser Keycap set I don't really have the extra $$ to throw at something like this anyways.

KM1337The headband applies pressure to the foam pads or speakers depending on the setting. Thicker would probably crush your head. Also they are so light they done need it.

TheProfosistValid on the band, i should have better phrased that, i was meaning more along the lines of extra padding, not a sheet of steel lol. But as you mentioned, due to being light wieght it might not be needed.

the13lawI recently found some info on the screw. I have a pair from Amazon that has a button instead of the screw. The screw is part of the original design. Apparently Koss had a Mexican plant that produced Portapros with the button. Only when the manufacture of these cans moved to China did they sport the screw once again.
And the screw is only fixed to the left. Possibly for that boom mike.

KM1337As an owner of Koss Porta Pro (without any mods yet), it is worth every single penny this toy-like product is worth. How do you put it, it's a very special product, made for people with both budget and clarity (with a punch of low end). When I was working at a pro headphones store, testing each and every single headphones, I can't find a single pair with similar price tag and performance, not sure about the new products but this definitely kicks the asses out of it's market. Grado's is a lil bit over the budget so I wouldn't add those into comparison.
Sound: Great, overall the response range is average and the clarity won't be washed out by the budget laid onto the development. Bass is "Koss" like and the wearing comfort is, 8/10. Wearing it over 3 hours will take a toll on your ears. There's no need for an AMP but if you do have it, pair this beauty up and it won't be disappointing :).
Build: Well made plastic construction ensures it's ability to survive at least, a very densely packed backpack. Over that, I have no idea but it won't last long if you've seat or let it grind through your bag's flooding goods. Dropped it several times and most of the time, the frame took the impact so minimum damage taken to the drivers. Cable's very thin, but it should ensures a 3 year's worth of normal usage, as in listening it and not bringing it around often.
To sum it up, if you are not an audiophile and you have the budget of a poor man, Koss Porta is for you. If you are an audiophile and you are looking for an lightweight, great-sounding and not a Grado, this is also for you :D. Rival: Sennheiser PX-100.

KM1337Don't worry they look a bit flimsy but are very durable, I've bought my first pair more than 20 years ago and they are still going strong. If you like headphones you owe it to yourself to own a pair of these. I recently bought the white ones and they are just as great as my old pair.

KM1337In this case, "flimsy" gives you light weight, easy to wear. When I got my first pair, I was surprised at how light weight they are!

razorbladerI got the white ones with the briaded cable as well they have been my travel phones for 2 years now. I had to import them from the UK. ALso picked up a beige pair of Limited Editions when those came out.
