Just rec'd my top today... I like the design & I find the grip very easy to get my spin on (much better than the knurled grip on my vorso). But I have to say that I'm underwhelmed by the work of the contract machine shop.
The brass top came tarnished in the box, with visible fingerprint oil stains all over (top & bottom)... maybe production should wear gloves? I am also getting noticeable stem flutter. The top looks like it "wants" to settle, but just never does and never appears "solid" as the stem flutter continues to worsen.
I would chalk this up to my being a noob and general lack of skill, but I'm getting 4:30 to 5:00 max on this and 8:00+ on my vorso. The vorso appears solid from the start, no stem flutter.

dasmanWow, that tarnish (and finger print!) are totally unacceptable when straight out of the box, IMO. I hope this isn't a sign of how they all will look when received.

ThunderBiscuitMine arrived similarly tarnished.
dasmanNot that you should have to, but if you get some 0000 steel wool, you can "satin finish" out the tarnish. On the ones I received I noticed both the tarnish and the finish as well, although yours looks worse than any of mine.

mitchlumI'm actually going to try some brasso first, then will go the steel wool route if need be.
More concerning is the stem flutter I'm getting. The best spin so far has been just over 6 min... avg spin is mid 4's
I feel that without the flutter it would easily approach 10min... it is really easy to spin, much easier to start than my vorso copper (which actually feels like it has a higher CG than the lighter brass top.)
dasmanI know this design is capable of 10+ because some of the protos that the contract machinist produced were fairly smooth andable to break 10. The amount of flutter/shake is dissipating energy resulting in shorter times. I personally ordered 30 of these to give out to friends. I'm seeing a pretty wide variation of performance in the ones I got.
[EDIT/UPDATE]: When I say wide variation, I'm talking 6-9+ minute spin times.

mitchlumit's just too bad that the quality control of the machine shop doesn't match the quality of the design. Massdrop needs to find a better shop if they are going to drop this again

mitchlumI can attest to 10+. Once I learned you have to spin tops pretty hard (generally speaking), I was consistently getting 8:30–10:30 times, with the median time being about 9:30. Mine, fortunately, does not have stability issues. After half a dozen spins that petered out at 8:30 this evening, I just got lucky with one that went to 14:05+ (!). And that's with the supplied glass, for someone who's never owned a precision top before. So it's clearly a solid design that had some inconsistent execution at the contract manufacturer. Let this be recorded for posterity/in case this model drops again! I didn't think I could ever break 14:00 without tungsten...
sudevaWow breaking 14 minutes! That's great!

mitchlumAnd another report on this top for posterity... on one spin today the final rotations were so slow and steady (about 30 RPM for a good long while) that at the end it just slowed to a halt still standing perfectly vertical. Does this mean I can leave the clock running? :)
