@MiTo I'd say you're wrong calling it cyberpunk, instead I believe it's more Synthwave/Retrowave
synthwave (/outrun) is about an alternative past (1980's ) (see hotline miami) - commonly featuring laser grids, deloreans, clean lines, fractured sunsets etc.
cyberpunk is about an alternative future (see blade runner or altered carbon) To my eye, the clothes have a style indicative of the synthwave/outrun aesthetic, and don't resemble cyberpunk - commonly featuring, dystopian visuals (hypercapitalism/dictatorship/lots of advertisements), weapons, crowded skylines, attractive women and sometimes digital body augmentations.
I'd be more than happy to discuss and learn though!
(the clothes look pretty damn cool, don't know if my wallet could handle it yet though XD)

prud475It’s a cool observation you made, the Cyberpunk aspect / contribution is more of a thing that comes from the short story. I think if you read you’ll understand more the character.

prud475I would tend to agree. The cyberpunk label was coined to describe the work of Neal Stephenson and William Gibson. Lot's of dystopian, gritty street vibes. The movies which influenced and were influenced by cyberpunk are filled with lots of black clad of dingy characters. Not so much the vibrant colors. Akira wasnt really cyberpunk. If you want a good example of cyberpunk anime check out Ghost in the Shell.

CalaverasgrandeNeal Stephenson hadn't even published a novel when "cyberpunk" was coined. You got the Gibson part right, though. :)

MiTonot digging how our convo (and your explanation) has a paywall my dude..
Still not sure how the clothes designs have anything to do with cyberpunk.. are they what your character wears? What's the deal? XD
I know it's minutia, but just because it's from a 'cyberpunk' text doesn't mean it's inherently cyberpunk, when taken out of context, the clothes are synthwave through and through.

prud475> designs have anyyhing to do with cyberpunk
I literally just said you could have a better understanding by reading the short story novel I wrote. Characters wear this jacket. Not only that but Akira is a cyberpunk drama and this jacket borrow elements of design from it such as the pill. Apparently you're not familiar with cyberpunk and is being pedantic about synthwave/outrun. These are all pop culture style man, interpret them as you want.

MiToI didn't assert that there was no cyberpunk aspect to the design, only that calling it wholly cyberpunk is incorrect.
Sure, the pill on the back of the hoodie (one of the three items) has some significance (especially within the cyberpunk genre and aesthetic) however it's like saying a car is a torch because it's got headlights - basing the product and/meaning of a thing on a small component of the design doesn't make sense.
Also it doesn't make a whole lotta sense for you to say 'These are all pop culture style man, interpret them as you want. [sic]' while simultaneously trying to prove me wrong...
🤔

prud475Who exactly is it misleading? The people who care know the difference and won't buy it if they don't like it, and the people who don't care won't be misled, because they don't care.

MiTohow on earth is Akira cyberpunk? There is very little if any emphasis on 'cyber' or hacking. It's certainly science fiction, and there are elements of anti-government, anticapitalist sentiment. But it's really just your standard story about a young Japanese guy having an existential crisis, with unusual results. Ghost in the Shell and Serial Experiments Lain are better examples of cyberpunk anime.

CalaverasgrandeNot saying I agree nor disagree...just wondering what movies you're referring to by "The movies which influenced and were influenced by cyberpunk are filled with lots of black clad of dingy characters. Not so much the vibrant colors. " I know Neuromancer hasn't been made into a movie (yet!) and Idk about you but the Snow Crash movie had me embarrassed for itself.

Lefibonaccithe obvious three are Blade Runner, Matrix and Dark City. Hackers, The Net, Strange Days also. The early Verhoven stuff and Gilliams Brazil trilogy, Road Warrior etc are all dystopian. But cyberpunk? I dont know. I do know Johnny Mnemonic was awful!

LefibonacciIf you haven't already seen them, Paul Verhoevens Total Recall and Robocop make an excellent double feature. And the Anime Ghost in the Shell tv series, and original movie from 1995 are pretty seminal (cited by the Wachowski's as an influence on the Matrix.)

CalaverasgrandeI have seen Total Recall and Robocop - I grew up a fan of robocop, and saw the 2014 reboot opening weekend (: Thanks for the suggestion. The ghost in the shell anime wasn't for me - the art got to me for some reason - same as bleach! Just not my flavor.. I am going to be checking out Serial Experiments though. Gotta start getting in the mood for DefCon26 next week ;)

prud475Old school cyberpunk is kind of retro now .... A bit like gibsons Gernsback continuum...... the buck Rodgers 1950s that never happened. Check out farcry blood dragon ...that style matches these garments I think.
Interestingly if you read about today's world 20 + Years ago ....it would be completely cyberpunk. Completely and utterly.
