AbulaI'm running (70 ohms) LCD-2c's with the Liquid Carbon X + SDAC and the volume is at 10 o'clock on high gain and it's as far as i'll go. That said, I'm not using the SDAC... I'm currently using a DacMagic 100.
Timmay_8LCX should be great. Neutral. Great power - though I don’t think these headphones will need the high gain on it, just normal. I power a wide range of headphones from my LCX - from high impedance 6XX and DT 1990, down to more efficient Elex.
AbulaDunno about the amp but asfair it is a tad more to the bright side.
I love e.g. the T90 which is more than a tad on the bright side.
To tame these kind of headphones I use a R2R dac, specifically the Audio GD R28 (DAC&).
But I didnt hear the ethers so I dont really know - however I suspect.
Also any tube amp with a nice tube could be a good match.
blunt0idFrom the FR graphs posted the Cx treble has been tamed some versus the Ether C and AFC... I have the AFC and the LCX and can confirm that the treble peak is a bit pronounced on the AFC powered by the LCX... I am hoping that the Cx is a bit better behaved, and I think the FR gives reason for hope.
Now, my opinion, and my opinion only... Don't get an amp to compensate for the shortfalls of a headphone, and don't get a DAC to compensate for the shortfalls of an amp... Get headphones that meet your listening tastes, and the rest of the gear should not get in the way or otherwise color the headphones... Reason I say this is that you don't want to have such a customized chain that if you get a new pair of headphones you have to get another chain to make the headphones sound just right to you... EQ - two letters that are a 4 letter word to so many, should be the tool of choice to fix something in the overall chain. But this is ONLY my opinion.
jsmiller58I'm only wondering because I'm relatively inexperienced in this whole area. I have patience to wait for things. I currently have HD6xx with balanced 2.5mm cables, Beyer 770 250ohm Pros, a old Fiio E07k for my desktop, and Pioneer XDP-300R DAP. I'm looking to settle for a very nice set of headphones and an amp/dac combo that would work with my desktop to reward my self for working 65hours 6 day weeks for the past 3 months. I think these will satisfy the headphone purchase, but not sure about amp/dac. There's also that Monolith by Monoprice amp/dac with nice specs coming out next month. It looks pretty on paper, but not sure if will be the best solution under $500. I'm open to suggestions that's between $300 and $500, and waiting to buy is not a big deal.
Timmay_8Cool! I just wanted to emphasize that it is crazy to customize pairings, otherwise you may spend a few thousand on DACs and amps (says I, while not making eye contact given the number of DACs and amps I have bought this year)... though I have not heard any set up with the SDAC, maybe an SDAC/CTH or SDAC/LCX... I have both the stand alone LCX and CTH amps and think highly of them... I might suggest driving whatever amp you get with a separate DAC as that is an easier upgrade path in the future... if your budget were higher you could do D50/CTH, or D7XS (or SMSL SU8)/LCX (in balanced config), but each of those combos will be >500... I have not heard it, but have also read good things about the JDS Element DAC/amp combo at only 350.00
if interested in the Monoprice offering (which I am as well) wait for reviews. You have time till the CX show up).
Given that the heaphones are not out yet, but looking for some advise into what amp you guys think would match it well?
