Hey all,
This will be my first foray into raw denim, and coincidentally it's also my first foray into jean measurements beyond just waist and length. All of my jeans I wear tend to be W32L32 (length is not a concern of course); as such should I consider getting a size 30, or going up to 31 to accommodate any shrinkage? Thanks for your help!
TooberIt really depends on the brands of the jeans you have currently, most manufacturers sizes will vary from on another. What I would recommend it to take as similar a cut as you have on hand that is comfortable to you and measure it out. Use those measurements to inform your size choice for these and expect they will stretch ≈.5" to 1"

TooberDon't trust other brands sizing, most of them aren't accurate and are members of the "Vanity Sizing Club". My method for sizing is: Take your best fitting jeans and lay them flat. The jeans should be snug and broken in, so you can wear them without a belt and you don't expect more stretching. Take a measurement tape and stretch the waist, so the top button is parallel to the back of the waistband and there is no dip (no V shape in the waistband) and measure, that's how N&F measure their pants. Let's say it's 30 inches. Then go to the sizing chart provided by N&F and choose your size minus a few inches, let's say 2 (i.e. 28 inches), because denim will stretch something between 2 and 4 inches when fully broken in, depending on the fabric weight, type of cotton, your lifestyle and so on. Because these are midweight denim jeans, they will eventually stretch out about 3 inches, roughly.
andreyerBe careful with telling people to downsuse too much to accommodate for stretch because they will not want to get a size that is too small to wear before it has stretched, because they would never get a chance to get to that stretched part. For me a 36 isnt as tight as I would like, but going down to a 34 and I can't button them up at all and it's only a 1.5 inch difference. its a dangerous game when you can't return/exchange.

dead_pixel_designI'm fully aware, so that's why I'm insisting it's my experience, and mine only. And that's why I downgraded the stretching out up to 3". I think that figure it's pretty safe in the long run. Jeans keep on stretching out for a bunch of weeks, I could say about 3 months. And then they shrink when you wash them, but they will stretch out again.
