Just received mine after long delay. First off, for $60 I don't think I wasted my money although there are some (for me negligible) issues w/the unit:
I am comparing sound quality to the Westone 30J's , which is obviously not fair and representative comparison, but that is all I got.
The NuForce sound is a bit dull w/highs not coming through, although that should not be a surprise considering that it is a 1 bit driver only. Low frequencies are OK although bass is not overwhelming, which is actually good as that balances the somewhat flat curve on the treble. For me it does not matter that much since I am going to be using that unit on my motorcycle and I certainly did not want to put my Westone's through that repeated torture. If I however were to want this to use as my primary source for music, I'd be not happy knowing what the Westone's deliver.
The earbuds provided w/the unit are decent in terms of comfort and fit. Quality control however appears to suck. The memory foam ones I received were all crumbled and out of the four I received, two are so differently sized that they do not even remotely look the same. So either I am missing two different earbuds, or quality control is so bad that one of the pair I received just does not match. Since I however have plenty of Westone buds and a collection from all of my other prior monitors, I won't bother asking for a replacement bc I just don't want to deal w/Massdrop's "customer no service."
Otherwise, the rest of the package impresses. The storage pouch is small and reminds me of the Oakley sunglass vault, which actually suits me better than the relatively large Westone Pelican-inspired hardcase. I like the fact that the NuForce has two cables provided, which is very much appreciated although I am hoping that this is not a reflection of quality.
Cables come off easily, which is definitely a plus over the Westone's as their connector is incredibly tight and a pain to get off. I suppose it depends on one's philosophy but for my purposes, I like the Nu-Force design for the bike although it remains to be seen whether vibrations will cause problems w/the connections (the Westone's never skipped a beat and always stayed on w/out any distortion in signal.)
The helmet test w/the Nuforce was actually very nice. I am wearing a Schuberth C4 and there were no issues putting the helmet on with the NuForce one (Westone's were at times a bit problematic bc they stick out of my ears just a tid more compared to the NuForce). Not sure about comfort yet as I have not taken a long distance ride. Having the mem foam buds in for about an hour was actually not uncomfortable although the buds that I selected were a bit large and expanded too large thus producing a bit pressure. I need to play around w/the selection to see what fits best. I know I do not have any issues w/the buds from Westone.
Overall, the unit is well worth the $60 I paid for it. Would I want to pay more for it? Probably not Would I want this as my my only monitors? Definitely not.
