This release is perfect....I have a pair of underpowered Elac UB5's at the moment, and I'll likely use this to power them... I was previously looking at the Schiit Vidar/Freya or Saga combo but going for this drop will save me quite a bit. Plus, I don't need 200W RMS at 4 Ohms for a pair of bookshelf speakers, the Sprout II will be sufficient enough at 100W RMS into 4 Ohms. Any thoughts? This amp 100W RMS Class D or 200W RMS Class AB with tube preamp using the Schiit combo of $1050+ (Freya or Saga with Vidar)?

drummer307I believe amps are typically over rated when it comes to speakers. Real speakers have significantly higher distortion and audio altering things than a pair of headphone will, so using a power amp that far exceeds what a speaker is capable of is just a waste. Either of those amps will be fine for your speakers, but spending 2x as much on the Shiit setup seems wasteful to me and I doubt you would ever hear a difference.
Now I have heard a $400,000 system with just two speakers and amps for the speakers and it was absolutely incredible. Nothing has ever compared to that quality. So yes there are speakers out there that can make use of insanely high end amps. But general home stuff and bookshelf speakers are not really among them.

If you really want to know the differences though, Id say the Schiit setup is *technically* something like 10x better specifications than this Sprout 2 unit. For instance, the Vidar is rated for 0.01% distortion at 100w power draw and the Sprout 2 is rated for 0.01% distortion by the time it gets to only 1w power draw. You also dont having things like switching supplies and radio interference in the Schiit setup like you do with this.

EniGmA1987Thanks going for the Sprout II for now... If I ever manage to upgrade my setup to GoldenEar Trition series (Triton Five, Triton One, or Reference) I'll look into the Schiit combo later if I cross that bridge.

drummer307I am also going to be powering Elac´s (403). Will post some observations on how that goes. Theoretically it should be sufficient.
