I heard the 660s and the 600s the other day in the store and compared to my 6XX. If you haven't gotten a 6XX my honest opinion is get these or a 600. The 6XX is great but the less dark members of the line are better in a lot of ways.

MFillmoreYou're saying get the 58X over the 6XX?

Mark_MIf you like a brighter sound then yes. Don't let the fact it is new scare you.

MFillmoreI'm not really familiar with all the terminology. What is meant when people say a headphone is brighter (or darker)? I'm coming from HD598s.

Mark_MDarker is kind of more like the 598s where the treble is toned down a bit. Think like treble reduction. Whereas brighter means more treble.

MFillmoreHmm so I'd hear things like stringed instruments and voices more clearly? There wouldn't be any bass-y undertone? I don't think my 598s are dark but perhaps they are a little. I went from Sony headphones (MDR-10rbt) to the 598s and it was a big difference. The Sony's are very bass heavy comparatively.

Mark_MThey would sound less bassy overall than the 650s and vocals and strings would be more clear yes. Sony tends to make very dark bluetooth headphones so yes any of the 580/600/650/6XX/660 would be less dark.

MFillmoreYeah. I also have Sennheiser HD4.40 bluetooth headphones. They sound great overall. But the ear cups are almost too small. Just barely fit around my ears (they're advertised as "over ears") and there is barely any padding on the headband. They're not bass-y at all. Very clear for BT headphones. ... I wouldn't want anything less bass-y than the 598s but a bit more clarity would be welcome. Just not overly bright. The only annoyance for me is the wait time but $149 is more in my price range than $199.

MFillmoreInitially the darkness on these headphones also bothered me but after 2 days I got used to it. Whether someone likes the 580, 600 or 650/6xx is purely personal preference and synergy. I prefer my 600 on my entry setup like the ODAC, O2 or Aune. But the 650/6xx scales far better and on a high end rig it sounds absolutely phenomenal (to me).
