Anyone Here getting both the hd6xx and the hd58x? / why?

DavestefIf I could afford it I'd probably get both just so I could compare. We already know the 6XX is great but there's much uncertainty about the 58X except a handful of reviews.

DavestefI am! My HD 650 works phenomenally well for most genres of music (in fact, you probably won't ever need anything else besides a 650 when paired with a good DAC). But, I guess I'm just collecting Sennheiser headphones at this point.

TekkamanRainI'm still debating. The 6XX now has a proven track record but the 58X is virtually untested. Plus it has a longer wait time. At almost $210 CAD for the 58X and then waiting 6 months to get them to see if they're even any good has me hesitant to pull the trigger.

Mark_MThat's true. The wait's long, and it's still rather expensive, too. Also, for the price of this, you'll be able to get a better DAC/Amp for your 6XX (provided that you don't have one already, of course!).

TekkamanRainI don't have either one yet. I'm debating between the two. Right now I have the HD598s and a Micca Origen+ DAC/Amp.

Mark_MOh, alright. I have a HD 598, and getting a 650 was a HUGE upgrade. It's just a much better headphone than the HD 598 in every way. If you have to choose between either, just get the 6XX, you won't regret it.

TekkamanRainHmm. Can I swap the headband padding for the style on the 58X? I think it's the same one on the HD600s with the four bumps. That one looks more comfortable to me.

Mark_MApparently, you can! It will require some light modding, though (like in this vid).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbsP3QDJFLk
Although, I have to say, the headband on the HD650 is very comfortable. You probably wouldn't need to change it out once you try it out. In terms of comfort, the biggest issue with these headphones is the clamping force at the sides of your head. It'll feel uncomfortable (like a vice grip) until you've fully broken them in.

TekkamanRainCool thanks. I'll check out that video later. I'm still deciding between the 58X and the 6XX. Largely based on price and that the 58X will take longer to ship.

DavestefI ordered both to add to my collection of 600 series headphones. I currently have the HD600, 650, and 660 S, and I'm just waiting for the right pair of 580's to show up on Ebay. It hard to find ones in really good condition beyond the parts that can be replaced.

dnalekawI would've never remembered that headphone by its designation, but after seeing the pictures I remember seeing it in some of the local shops (unless it was the HD 545, I really don't remember anything other than the general design). I purchased my first HD 600's after the 580's were out of production, but I had heard the HD 580's years before that (I just couldn't afford them at the time). I'll have to do some additional reading on the HD 565's.

OCBobWhat a nice setup you have! My father handed down his 565's to me which were made in 1997. Not that old for Sennheiser headphones, but are ancient compared to my other pairs. They sound very much like the 600's with a bit more low-end, still punchier than the 650's though. Soundstage is also bigger than the two so a little detail is lost. All in all great headphones, settles nicely with gaming.

dnalekawThanks, it's on the dining room table because I was re-modeling the old home office. I'd imagine that there's something special about a pair of headphones passed down from one's father that also gives them a little something extra.

Its_Me_JoseI just looked at what is was right after I joined the drop. As far as I could tell, that was the number I joined at. I guess the first 500 people are supposed to have a serial # less than #550. Not that I think that matters. I just wanted to add these to my HD6xx line collection.

MusicFuelsYourSoulI'm currently bidding on a pair that's at $125. They look to be in good shape, and have new pads. I have my bidding set to go as high as $150. I'd consider going higher, but when you can't hear them or examine them, and there's no warranty, it becomes a lot of money to gamble with.

OCBobThat is true. My Dad bought mine for for my 16th birthday. I was a passionate music lover then and more so now. I would struggle to sell, even though I know that the acoustics are perfect. Also well burned in LoL!! I am putting emotion before financial I feel, but my 580 cans set me on my direction of travel,
Mine are 17 years old. Excellent condition. New headband pad and ear pads in the last year. Also upgrade to the HD600 cable as it needed a new cable after all those years. Still have the original HD580 cable which works well, just needs a refresh.

OCBobThat is a lovely stack you have there even with the Jotunheim not included!
@OCBob How are you using them all?
I want to start having a feel of tubes and in the future maybe some tube rolling. I see you have a Little Dot MKII and Valhalla 2. I currently have a Jotunheim as well and am not sure on the best tube option. Love Schiit products (always makes me smile) or should I branch out?
Your advice would be really appreciated!
Cheers :)

MusicFuelsYourSoulI had the Bifrost, Valhalla 2, Asgard 2 before I purchased the Jot last month. I used an A/B switch between the Bifrost and the 2 amps. I still drag out the Little Dot (my first tube amp) since it's such a great pairing with my 600's and 650's (Voskhod tubes, sometimes Mullards). With the Jot I really wanted to see what the whole fuss about balanced listening was. The impact on my 700's and the 650's is impressive. I didn't feel the change was as significant with the 600's and 660 S', but you can certainly hear it. The Jot also works great with all of my HD5xx series cans. The Little Dots are a great place to start with tubes, especially given the price and availability of great tubes. Compared to the sound of the Valhalla 2, the LD MK II is noticeably more "tubey". The ability to crank up the gain with the Little Dots is a great benefit as well. I've actually been using the Little Dot MK II off the Jot's single-ended outputs and you could make your ears bleed (I have the gain switches set at "5" and run the Jot at the 1:30 volume position. The noise floor on my LD is impressive as well as the channel separation. I purchased directly from Little Dot through LittleDot.net (which seems to be on maintenance today).

MusicFuelsYourSoulIf you're interested, that pair of HD580's I was bidding on went for $286. My final bid was $170, and I was unwilling to go any higher. I actually ended up buying a pair of used Koss ESP-950 Electrostatics instead. I hope they're as nice as they look in the photos. I'm also really curious to see how they sound.

MusicFuelsYourSoulThey did turn up, and they sound fantastic. I wouldn't call them "Endgame", but they're darn close. They have incredible mid-range, and I also like the highs and lows. The highs aren't sibilant unless the recording is poor (they're some of the most unforgiving cans I've used), and the bass can go deep though the volume of that bass will drop off quickly. The dynamics are the best I've ever heard in a headphone. They play great with all different genres of music, but they really excel with jazz, classical, singer/songwriter, adult contemporary, and classic rock. It's also been a long time since a pair of headphones had me checking the room to see where "that noise" came from. In my opinion, the look is good, the fit and finish are good, but the materials leave something to be desired. They're huge, so it's nice that the materials make them so light, but they just don't stand up to contemporary material standards. I was also happy that even though my pair was used they are in spectacular condition. I didn't even feel the need to replace the pads even though I'd bought a replacement set from Koss. I do notice an occasional whine in the left channel that comes and goes and is only audible at super low volume levels and during very quiet passages. I just got a pack of "C" batteries so I'll try running the energizer (amp) off battery power to see if it's something in my wiring, but my house is quite new and I've never had any electrical issues. If the problem persists I'll head over to Koss and have them help me (I live in the Milwaukee area). I've always had 5 star service from them. If you have any additional questions I'll do my best to answer.

OCBobThank you very much @OCBob
Really enjoy your style, thought and summation kind Sir.
Never really looked into Electrostatics although now I am. I have been looking up the Koss ESP-950 Electrostatics and the design to me is awesome and intriguing. I jabe looked in to Staxx several times and looking at the price I am doing what must be a reasonably standard headphone and improvements to lossless music files and with ever increasing disk space, that wall I used to hit has been taken down. I want to try all types of headphones and how they deliver the sound into your ear. I have a thing where I think if someone can answer a question they would of used it for a period of time. Obviously the more mus8c hardware knowledge you build up, the better your explanation of how they sound. Not sure what a real audiophile is, but me choosing my Sennheiser HD580 Precision on my 16th birthday changed music and how I listen to you it forever. My love relationship has just increased over the last 17 years.
You say that the Koss Electrostatic works very well with jazz, classical, singer/songwriter, adult contemporary, and classic rock all of which I listen to regularly.....I have always had the opinion that all headphones can produce sound, just certain headphones produce sound in such a manner that makes them exceptional for certain types. This reasoning is deployed when being asked why I need more than 1, 3, 5, 7 different headphones. The music makes me!!
Would like to get in touch with tou but nit MD. Are you on Head fi?
Thank you very much indeed! :)

DavestefI got them both. They are very different in reality. I also have very different pads on them and modded the 58x with the felt mod from HiFIHeaven. I find the 58x, when modded, as more of a reference sound signature, where as the 6xx sound is more "fun," not necessarily as "accurate."
